With Only Two Months Left to Decide, Mitt Romney Narrows the Gap for this Voter

With two months to go before the election, Yahoo! News asked a handful of undecided voters how they're leaning in the presidential race. Here's a perspective from one voter.

FIRST PERSON | MAYVILLE, Wis. -- There are only two short months before the 2012 presidential election, and it looks like it might come down to the wire. Each side has continued to dump giant sums of money into the race, and even larger swaths of rhetoric meant to tip the polls in their favor. While this voter is getting a bit exhausted, I still wearily pay attention to the commercials and speeches, patiently awaiting the debates.

Since my last article a month ago, there have been several new developments in the campaign. The selection of Paul Ryan as Mitt Romney's running mate shifted my vote toward the Romney campaign. Being from Madison, it is hard to root against Paul Ryan. After all, his hometown, Janesville, is a mere 20 miles from where I live.

Then, the Republican National Convention was held last week, and all of the major players in the Republican Party assembled in Tampa, Fla. On opening night, Chris Christie gave a lackluster speech that failed to excite the crowd and barely mentioned the nominee, Romney. Mr. Romney's wife, Ann, did deliver a well-prepared speech that attempted to bring Americans closer to her husband. While there were some touching moments indeed, I think the speech failed to capture the enthusiasm the campaign was going for.

Romney's acceptance speech finally came after six years of campaigning, but not before Clint Eastwood and Marco Rubio had a chance to speak. Eastwood delivered what I think will be remembered as one of the oddest convention speeches of all time, as he talked to an empty chair that was supposed to be seated by the invisible President Obama. To this voter, it seemed as all of the energy was sucked out of the room right before an amazing speech by Marco Rubio. Then, Mitt came on stage and delivered what seemed to be his best speech that I have ever seen.

Mitt Romney seemed excited to be on stage, and the energy finally seemed to come from somewhere within him. He made several points that stuck with me, including noting the divisive atmosphere we now have in Washington under President Obama, as well as his insistence on helping American families. For me, it was the first time I felt a connection to Mitt Romney. In the end, I cannot be sure it will be enough to sway my vote, especially since Romney did fail to adequately address the war in Afghanistan. At this point, my vote is still slightly leaning towards President Obama. I still believe he has the edge to help a 24-year-old blue-collar worker like me, but there are still two months before the election. It is still anybody's game.
