November is Lung Cancer Awareness Month

Are you aware of the current state of lung cancer in America? Do you fear that you may have lung cancer, or do you think that you do not have a chance at getting lung cancer?

You may be at risk of getting lung cancer if you have been exposed to:

  • Radon
  • Asbestos
  • Tobacco smoke: first or second hand
  • Dioxins used in wars and battles, such as Agent Orange
  • Industrial chemicals
  • Unusually high beta-carotene

1. Radon: Radon is a naturally occurring gas that is present in many areas of our country. In particular, Radon could be present inside your home. You cannot smell Radon. It may be in the materials of your house. The EPA can help you find out if your home has radon ? order a simple Radon test kit.? Also from the EPA ? if you find that you do have Radon gas in your home, contact a qualified Radon services professional right away to remove the source of the gas.

2. Asbestos: Exposure to asbestos at any time for any length of time can cause Mesothelioma, a highly deadly lung disease. When a company knows that it has had asbestos in its walls at any time, they are required to notify the people that worked there at that time. Most of the time, the company will order a free asbestosis test to determine if there is an asbestos scar on the lung. At that time, they will determine what the next step should be. In case of tumorous growth and cancer, there are a few very difficult treatments that are being tried in hospitals around the country. One of the newest treatments may be derived from the measles virus. There is also a new biomarker to make testing for mesothelioma easier for the patient. Previously, many tumors were not seen before open-chest surgery.

Mesothelioma is a horrible disease from which to suffer. Unfortunately, the law forbidding asbestos from the American market place was overturned 21 years ago. It is still possible for companies to use this toxic and deadly product, and expose people to it. For more information and to help, see curemeso.org.

3. Tobacco smoke: Most people know that tobacco smoke is dangerous to a person?s lung health. The deadly truth is that a smoker puts his or her family at risk every him they light up. There are 3000 cases of lung cancer due to second hand smoke every year.

4. Dioxins. Many military service members are at risk for lung cancer because of exposure to Agent Orange, kerosene, burning oil, and even possible uranium exposure. For help, see the Veterans? Health Council.

5. Industrial Chemicals. We are exposed to industrial chemicals daily, especially those who live in proximity to industrial plants. Other chemicals that may not be considered quite so often could be chemicals used in the beauty industry or even in painting.

6. ??Unusually high beta-carotene. A recent study shows that people who are already at risk for lung cancer actually increase their risk if they take an additional beta carotene supplement. Therefore, if you are at risk, do not take extra vitamin A outside of your normal food intake.

The bottom line: We are not safe from lung cancer. Even non-smokers can have lung cancer.

Lung Cancer is a terrible and dangerous disease.

To help protect you and your family from lung cancer:

  • Refrain from smoking
  • Become more aware of the chemicals that surround you and your family
  • Get your home tested for Radon
  • Avoid exposure to unnecessary chemicals

If you are concerned about your health, or the health of someone in your family, or have further questions about lung cancer, please talk to your doctor.

On the road to a common ground for Ethiopia?s energy plans and conservation of migratory soaring birds

Black Storks ? Richard Porter

Stakeholders from Ethiopia?s energy sector and civil society organisations recently discussed the common need to promote renewable energy while ensuring that considerations of the risks to migratory soaring birds are made during the planning and operational processes of wind, solar and transmission lines developments. This was during a workshop held in Addis Ababa on 12-13 November 2012 under the auspices of the BirdLife International/UNDP/GEF ?Mainstreaming Conservation of Migratory Soaring Birds into Key Productive Sectors along the Rift Valley / Red Sea Flyway? project and hosted by the Ethiopia Wildlife and Natural History Society (EWNHS, BirdLife in Ethiopia). Over 30 participants from across government, energy sector, conservation organizations and environmental regulations agencies learnt of the ambitious development plans for renewable energy and grid development in Ethiopia.

??The presence? of a big delegation at this workshop from? government agencies led? by H.E the State Minster for Water and Energy is a clear manifestation of the commitment, desire and will by the government to work together with us to promote green energy and sustainable development that takes into consideration environmental? and biodiversity conservation concerns?? Ato Mengistu Wondafrash, the Chief Executive Officer of Ethiopian Wildlife and Natural History Society ? (BirdLife in Ethiopia)

They were also informed of the country?s importance for migratory soaring birds using the Rift Valley/ Red Sea Flyway, along which over 1.5 million migratory soaring birds pass twice a year.

The workshop presented a set of tools developed by the Migratory Soaring Birds (MSB) project to aid the energy sector in understanding potential impacts on bird populations and ways to minimise these impacts.? Renewable energy has the potential to deliver truly green development, but if developments are inappropriately placed they can have significant negative effects. Guidance for the wind and solar renewable energy sectors and related power line development were presented, which if adopted could mitigate against risks to migratory species. Further guidance highlighted the integral role that Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) has in appropriate siting of renewable energy developments and the need to consider birds and biodiversity within these assessments.? A sensitivity mapping tool developed by BirdLife was presented. It will aid government and the energy sector in considering threats to MSBs along the flyway when siting wind farms and other structures and help in identifying areas to avoid.

The workshop was officially opened by H.E Eng. Wondimu Tekle, State Minister for the Ministry of Water and Energy who stressed the need for striking a balance between development and biodiversity conservation and explained the various efforts the government is putting in place to adopt green economy to spur economic growth? and reduce greenhouse emissions. As a signatory to the Convention on Migratory Species among other international agreements, the Minister emphasised the government?s commitment

Workshop participants with Guest of Honour H.E Eng. Wondimu Tekle, State Minister, Ministry of Water and Energy ?George Eshiamwata

??As a signatory to the Convention on Migratory Species among other Multilateral Environmental Agreements, Ethiopia has national commitments? to safeguard environment and? biodiversity and? in order to reduce negative impacts, Environmental Impact Assessment is therefore part and parcel of any energy development? H.E Eng.? Wondimu Tekle, State Minister, Water and Energy

and obligations to safeguard flora and fauna especially considering the importance of Ethiopia on the Rift Valley/Red Sea Flyway.

A field trip to the Adama I Wind Farm 100km East of Addis Ababa gave participants an opportunity to understand the wind farm operations and the importance of siting developments in a way that will reduce risks to birds.

Energy is a sector undergoing unprecedented growth in the region and is expected to increase as economies develop and people gain greater access. This increase if not planned in a strategic way poses a significant threat to migratory birds. This may be through loss of habitat, the creation of barriers to movement and direct mortality from collisions with energy infrastructure and electrocutions. This workshop enabled many stakeholders to come together to discuss ways in delivering renewable energy which is truly green and integrates birds and biodiversity concerns.

??This workshop showed the common bond that should exist between?the MSB project and the Ethiopian government to ensuring development of sustainable renewable energy in Ethiopia. This can only be true if impacts upon migrating soaring birds are considered in all aspects of the development processes. The positive response from the governments shows Ethiopia?s ambition to lead the green economy in the horn of Africa?? said Marcus Kohler, the Senior Programme Manager, Global Flyways Programme at BirdLife International

The workshop was funded through the BirdLife/UNDP/GEF Migratory Soaring Bird project. The project is mainstreaming conservation of soaring birds within five sectors (Energy, Waste Management, Agriculture, Hunting and Tourism) within 11 countries along the Rift Valley/ Red Sea flyway. It is also developing tools and guidance material for developers, decision makers, policy makers, donors and investors in all sectors.

What Women Want: 10 Tips to Attract Female Buyers on Social Media

Women influence the decision in 85% of all new car and truck sales in the United States. They purchase 44% of all new vehicles (AskPatty.com). That?s about $200 Billion in annual car sales led by women. No longer a ?niche segment?, women are a powerful group of consumers capable of making a significant impact to your bottom line.

It?s no shock that women and men act differently online, just as they do in real life. While men are early adopters of new technology, when it comes to today?s Social Web, women are at the forefront. While the trends indicate both sexes are using Social Media in huge numbers,?Bloomberg BusinessWeek?found that women far outpace men.

As a result, the opportunities for dealerships and other business to market to women using Social Media continues to grow. Male adoption of Social Media is growing but it?s not keeping pace with the expanding engagement among female users. Here?s why.

Women?s behavior online is less transactional and more relationship-driven.?They spend more time on Social networks building relationships, communicating with friends, and making new friends. ?They use Social networks to be social so a dollar spent marketing to acquire a female user goes a lot further than on a male user.

We already know that women spend more and make more purchasing decisions than men, and women seem to be more likely to tell their friends about their purchases?so an advertiser will get a double benefit from female consumers.

A survey conducted by?Women?s Marketing Inc?and?SheSpeaks?published new findings that will help dealers and other businesses refine their?marketing tactics, especially when they pertain to the female demographic.

*Women are more likely to purchase from brands they follow. Engaging the female buyer with content that solves their problems, satisfies their desires and aligns with their values makes your brand remarkable.

*Women use Social Media to connect different aspects of their lives. They?re primarily on Social Media to forge meaningful connections, whether in with their personal circles or interacting with brands. Smart marketers combine these two kinds of outreach to create a Social Media content strategy that women are willing to connect with ? and share with their friends.

In a recent study from?She-conomy, of 58 categories, ?Cars? ranked second-highest in which women have the most dissatisfaction of retailers meeting their needs. The time to act on connecting with the female buyer is now. There?s no more waiting around or looking forward to the recession ending so things can ?return to normal?.

Knowing that women are your market is only half the battle. To win, you must know how to connect with them effectively. Here are 10 tips for using Social Media to reach the female buyer:

1. Listen. Empathize with the female buyer?s challenges and make sure she?s heard.

2. Stop interpreting female needs from a male perspective. Your struggles are not hers. Listen with an open ear and mind.

3. Steer clear of telling women what they want. Your content on Social Media needs to connect with them. Broadcasting messages about your brand turns them off.

4. Always connect and engage before you start selling.

5. Success can take time. Don?t expect immediate results.

6. Clearly address valid expectations. It?s your business to know what your customer expects. Discuss expectations openly and authentically.

7. Don?t waste time looking for ways around the time required to build relationships.

8. Learn how to engage the female buyer. Ask questions. Paint a picture of your local community and look at it from a female perspective.

9. Never open a Social Media channel with little or no strategy. Define where your customer is and take each platform one at a time. Always have an objective and set goals.

10. Work from a multi-layered sales process, not from a linear mindset. Today?s customer, male or female, does not buy from you simply because your ads say they should. There?s a lot of behind the scenes investigations that happen. Make sure you?re in each one of those scenes, conversing and engaging.

?????????? Whiplash treatment in san francisco 94111
We have been providing treatment for whiplash in San Francisco for over 20 years.

Whiplash injuries occur as the result of a sudden acceleration followed by deceleration, and the degree of injury is dependent on many factors. Some of these include: the size of the vehicle, the conditions of the road, the angle of the seat back, the ?springiness? of the seat back, the position of the head rest, the size of the patient?s neck, the position of the patient?s head and neck at the time of impact, the awareness of the impending collision, etc. Hence, each case must be evaluated and managed using a unique, individualized approach.

??????????? The chiropractic encounter begins with the history and examination. Here we will ask many questions and perform tests that will give us clues to understand the mechanism of injury, identify the primary tissues injured, and determine the best treatment approaches to utilize.

??????????? There are many different chiropractic treatment approaches available for patients with whiplash injuries. For example, manual therapies include spinal manipulation, mobilization, manual traction, muscle relaxation and/or stimulation methods, the assessment of the patient's physical capacities with issuing specific exercises and, considerations of modifying work station issues and/or lifestyle changes. Chiropractic manipulation is a very common approach utilized in the treatment of joint dysfunction. That is, restoring normal movement to the joints affected negatively by the whiplash injury. Terms such as, "stuck," "fixed," "subluxation," and the like are often used to describe altered joint position or function. Typically, the manipulation (also called ?adjustment?) is applied well within the normal range of motion of the joint using a ?high velocity? (or fast) movement through a short distance in the direction that attempts to correct the joint dysfunction. Because the procedure is quick and of short distance, patients frequently state, ??that felt great!? In fact, if the pre-adjustment position of the patient hurts or is uncomfortable, we will instead use a slow, mobilizing movement.

??????????? Exercise strategies are important and typically employed as soon as possible. The type of exercise is (again) case specific, but in general, exercises are initially prescribed in a manner that restores movement with as little discomfort as possible. Following the goal of increasing range of motion, strengthening the injured region with stabilization exercises, and restoring sensory-motor activity to the muscles becomes the primary focus in the management of the whiplash patient. When the intervertebral disks are ?deranged? or altered, directions that minimize radiating pain are emphasized in the exercises. After careful in-office training, the patient is instructed to perform exercises at home, often multiple times a day, for stability of the spine and to re-establish motor control and movement. Ergonomic and daily lifestyle modifications are frequently addressed to avoid the possibility of the condition being irritated on a regular basis, thus interfering with the healing process. If a patient is stressing the injured area at work, job modifications can make or break the success of the management program.

??????????? We realize you have a choice in where you choose your healthcare services.? If you, a friend or family member requires care for whiplash, we sincerely appreciate the trust and confidence shown by choosing our services and look forward in serving you and your family presently and, in the future.

O'Reilly AlphaTech closes third venture fund - The ... - Fortune Finance

Foursquare backer O'Reilly AlphaTech Ventures?raises $85 million.

FORTUNE --?O'Reilly AlphaTech Ventures has closed its third fund with $85 million in capital commitments, Fortune has learned. The San Francisco-based firm had begun fundraising earlier this fall with a $75 million target, which was slightly above the $60 million it raised for Fund II in October 2010.

OATV is one of the original "micro-VC" firms, investing in seed-stage rounds that sit somewhere between angel investments and traditional Series A rounds. Typically it prefers to lead $1 million to $2 million seed rounds -- which are relatively large -- but also will go smaller if the opportunity is right.

Some of the firm's best-known investments are?Bitly, ChartBeat, Codecademy and Foursquare, while exited portfolio companies include?TripIt (acquired by Concur for $120m), Instructables (acquired by Autodesk) and Parakey (acquired by Facebook). OATV also is one of the few venture firms that doesn't scrub its website of failed deals -- such as Wesabe or Devver - and to briefly explain why its original investment theses didn't pan out.

OATV is managed by Bryce Roberts and Marc Jacobsen, with Tim O'Reilly/O'Reilly Media also serving as a general partner.

No. 3 K-State bolsters title shot, 23-10 at TCU

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) ? Collin Klein and third-ranked Kansas State bolstered their chances in the national championship chase by doing what Alabama failed to do.

The Wildcats beat one of the newcomers in their conference.

Only a few minutes after No. 1 Alabama lost, Klein threw a 62-yard pass to set up the first of his two touchdown runs and the Wildcats went on to a 23-10 victory Saturday night at TCU.

And on Sunday, Kansas State (10-0, 7-0 Big 12) seems likely to take over the top spot in the new BCS rankings.

"I have no thoughts about it whatsoever," said coach Bill Snyder, who claimed he didn't even know about Alabama's loss until getting in the locker room after the game.

"I just found out. My reaction was, 'Wow!'," said Anthony Cantele, who kicked three field goals. "It doesn't change what we're going to do. ... We'll enjoy it for what it is, and get back to work."

Kansas State's game had just started and Klein already had a rare turnover when SEC newcomer and former Big 12 team Texas A&M finished off its 29-24 victory at Alabama, the top team in the BCS standings and AP poll.

Kansas State, 10-0 for only the second time under Snyder, was already No. 2 in the BCS standings, one spot ahead of Oregon. The Ducks, No. 2 in the AP poll, played California later Saturday night.

"We still have a lot of things to accomplish. So as far as the rankings, we don't pay too much attention to that, because we obviously have a lot of work to do," defensive back Jarard Milo said. "We've just got to keep working and doing what we're doing as K-State."

Kansas State plays next Saturday night at Baylor, then has a week off before ending the regular season at home against 19th-ranked Texas.

Klein's third interception of the season came on only the fourth play against TCU (6-4, 3-4), which is in its first Big 12 season. Freshman defensive end Devonte Fields was back in coverage when he made a diving grab for his first career pick.

The Horned Frogs failed to take advantage by going three-and-out.

By time they got the ball back, they were trailing for good and on way to their third consecutive home loss, all to Big 12 teams. It is the first time since 1997 they have lost three consecutive home games in the same season.

"There is a very fine line, and that is a team that can play for a national championship," said TCU coach Gary Patterson, who faced his alma mater for the first time.

It was during the timeout for the change of possession after TCU's punt that Alabama's game ended.

Klein's next play was his 62-yard pass to Chris Harper, who got an extra 15 yards or so on the play dragging defenders after making the catch near midfield. That drive ended with the Heisman Trophy hopeful quarterback running for a 7-yard TD.

When TCU punted again, Tremaine Thompson had a 33-yard punt return to the Frogs 41. The first of Cantele's three field goals, a 41-yarder, made it 10-0.

Klein seemingly showed no ill effects from an apparent head injury that had knocked him out in the third quarter of last Saturday's victory against Oklahoma State.

But outside of the long pass and two TD runs, including a nifty 34-yarder in the third quarter that gave him 19 for the season, it wasn't Klein's best game statistically.

The senior quarterback was sacked a season-high three times while completing 12 of 21 passes for 145 yards. He had 15 carries for 50 yards.

"He played reasonably well. He made the plays he had to make in the game, but we were probably a little conservative for him," said Snyder, adding that it was because of TCU's defense. "We could have given him more chances than what we did. He managed the game as he always does."

Klein wasn't made available for interviews after the game.

Patterson, TCU's winningest coach with 115 wins in 12 seasons, started his coaching career as a K-State graduate assistant in 1982, long before Snyder got there, and was part of the Wildcats' first bowl team. He played there the previous two seasons, as a safety and linebacker who saw a lot of action on scout teams and a little on special teams.

Kansas State was the highest-ranked team to play in Fort Worth since 1970, when No. 2 Texas beat the Horned Frogs 58-0.

TCU didn't score until against the Wildcats until Jaden Oberkrom's 35-yard field goal with 6:59 left. Oberkrom was wide right on a 45-yard attempt at the start of the second quarter.

Trevone Boykin threw a 19-yard TD to Brandon Carter with 47 seconds left in the game.

Kansas State led 13-0 after Cantele made a 20-yard field goal with 28 seconds left in the first half. That came after Deante Gray tried to field a punt that sailed over his head, and it was recovered at the Frogs 5.

The Wildcats had yet another scoring chance before halftime when Ty Zimmerman returned an interception 30 yards to the TCU 31. But Cantele was wide right on a 48-yard field goal attempt on the final play of the half.

The Frogs have scored in 252 consecutive games since Nov. 16, 1991, the third-longest such streak in the nation behind Michigan (347) and Florida (307). Kansas State's streak of 200 games in a row is the eighth-longest in the nation.

Republican Immigration Reform Is a Thing Now -- Daily Intel

A few weeks ago, President Obama told the Des Moines Register editorial board that if he wins reelection, it will be because Republicans alienated Latinos, which would make them suddenly willing to support immigration reform. That prediction appears to be coming true ? right now. John Boehner is now saying, ?comprehensive approach is long overdue, and I?m confident that the president, myself, others can find the common ground to take care of this issue once and for all.? Equally reliable indications of party sentiment come from such figures as Sean Hannity and Charles Krauthammer. Immigration reform really looks like something that could happen in 2013.

To understand why, you need to know how the various power centers within the party work. The GOP has traditionally opposed immigration reform because most of its voters staunchly oppose illegal (or, in some cases, even legal) immigration. Immigration was actually the No. 1 concern of tea party activists. But Republican elites barely care about it, and many of them actually would like to increase immigration. The elites were willing to go along with what the base wanted, up to the point where this position poses a threat to the party?s ability to win national elections. The politics of immigration reform will center around the Washington leadership and business wing of the party attempting to tamp down a revolt among activists.

A second debate going on within the party centers on whether the GOP?s problem with Latino voters is entirely about immigration policy. The most convenient argument for Republicans is that it is ? they can move left on immigration, change nothing else whatsoever, and watch the Latino votes roll in. Krauthammer today:

A problem fixable with a single policy initiative is not structural. It is solvable. ?

There?s no need for radical change. The other party thinks it owns the demographic future ? counter that in one stroke by fixing the Latino problem. Do not, however, abandon the party?s philosophical anchor.

But here is the problem. Latinos aren?t voting Democratic solely because of immigration. Latino voters have generally liberal views on the whole role-of-government issues that divide the parties. The even-faster-growing Asian-American vote is likewise just broadly out of step with conservatism.

What conservatives are in denial about is that ideological conservatism largely appeals to white people qua white people. Matthew Yglesias has written extensively about the work of Donald Kinder and Cindy Kam, which shows that white ethnocentrism is powerfully correlated with opposition to spending on the poor, as well as to support for spending on universal programs. The Republican party platform of preserving every dollar of social insurance benefits for current retirees while slashing spending on Medicaid, food stamps, childrens? health insurance, and Obamacare is perfectly toned to appeal to white voters on ethnic grounds.

This isn?t to say the policies are inherently racist. Let me be clear about this: There are perfectly non-racial intellectual grounds to believe in small government conservatism. There are even non-racial grounds for believing the socialism-for-me-but-not-for-thee platform of the Republican party. But the actual political fact on the ground is that there aren?t many Wall Street Journal editorial page readers out there in America. And historically, the New Deal ran aground only when white voters came to see it as transferring money from them to the undeserving (nonwhite) poor. No modern precedent can be found for a small government conservatism that attracts majority support without relying heavily on white racial resentment for its votes.

Now, I don?t think conservatism is doomed to perpetual failure. Short-term events matter in politics far more than underlying ideology. A huge scandal, a bungled war, a return to recession, or the like could easily restore the GOP to power despite its ideological baggage. But conservatives do have a serious racial problem that strikes at their ideological core. The New Deal consensus started to collapse in the mid-sixties when large numbers of white voters saw government as taking from us and giving to them. As there are more and more them?s and fewer and fewer us?s, the political forces that drove Nixon and Reagan and Bush to power grows progressively weaker. Republicans need to modify their stance on immigration, but their deeper need is more profound: a way to sell limited-government conservatism that has a broader appeal than sublimated white Christian identity politics.

JetBlue pilot who disrupted flight free to go home

AMARILLO, Texas (AP) ? A JetBlue Airways pilot who disrupted a cross-country flight by leaving the cockpit and yelling about religion and terrorists is free to go home rather than be committed to a mental health facility, a Texas judge ruled Friday.

Clayton Osbon was charged with interference with a flight crew for the March incident, but was found not guilty by reason of insanity in July. A forensic neuropsychologist testified in a short, unpublicized trial that Osbon had a "brief psychotic disorder" brought on by lack of sleep.

U.S. District Judge Mary Lou Robinson said Friday that Osbon would be allowed to go free, but set certain conditions for his release. He will not be allowed to fly or board any commercial or private planes without the permission of Robinson or his probation officer, and he will not be allowed to communicate with any passengers from the March 27 flight he disrupted, according to the judge's order.

"This is a bad situation for you and your family, but you are fortunate to have the type of immediate support that you have," Robinson said.

Passengers on the March 27 flight from New York to Las Vegas said the 49-year-old Osbon ran through the cabin yelling about Jesus and al-Qaida. The flight was diverted and safely landed in Amarillo, Texas.

At least 10 passengers have sued JetBlue over the episode.

Osbon appeared in a green jail jumpsuit and did not make an extended statement in court. His attorney, Dean Roper, said afterward that he didn't know if Osbon would fly again, but was relieved the months-long legal proceeding was at an end.

"It's been a long ordeal for everyone involved, especially Mr. Osbon," Roper said.

Osbon left the federal courthouse without commenting to reporters and was expected head back to his home in Georgia later in the day. Osbon and a friend who attended the hearing planned to make the 1,300-mile trip by car, Roper said.

JetBlue spokeswoman Sharon Jones said Friday that Osbon still was employed and listed on "inactive duty." Jones declined to say if Robinson's order would affect that status.

Osbon showed up unusually late for the March 27 flight. The plane was in midair when he told his first officer that they wouldn't make it to their destination, according to court documents.

Osbon began to ramble about religion, scolded air traffic controllers to quiet down, then turned off the radios altogether and dimmed the monitors in the cockpit. He said aloud that "things just don't matter" and encouraged his co-pilot to take a leap of faith.

When he left the cockpit, passengers moved to restrain him. A flight attendant's ribs were bruised in the scuffle, but no one was seriously injured.

Neuropsychologist Robert E.H. Johnson testified in July that Osbon's psychotic disorder at the time of flight lasted for about a week afterward, according to a hearing transcript. He determined Osbon suffered from a brief psychotic disorder and delusions "secondary to sleep deprivation." He didn't say how long Osbon had gone without sleeping before boarding the plane, and his psychiatric evaluation of Osbon has been sealed.

Those symptoms made Osbon incapable of understanding why his actions on the flight were wrong, Johnson testified.

After the July trial, Osbon was sent to a prison medical facility in North Carolina for evaluation. Robinson was to decide what happened next for Osbon in August, but instead extended his evaluation period into October after being notified that Osbon had suffered a psychotic episode in prison. She did not say what the nature of the episode was, if it was connected to his previous disorder or what prompted it.

TV reporter's bad, bad night: Can't ID will.i.am

By Kurt Schlosser, TODAY

The long and tiring campaign season catches up to many Americans by the time Election Day rolls around. TV news reporters are no exception to this.

One reporter out of Miami is probably wishing today that the Internet wasn't so quick to pick up on the mistakes of others. But that cat's out of the bag, so let's have some fun!

Gawker tips us to Blake Burman over at "camp Obama" on?Tuesday night, where the reporter for Fox affiliate WSVN-7 had a little trouble putting a correct name to one famous face.

"Just giving you a little bit of what you see here," Burman says, nodding his head as the camera pans right to show two men talking. "That's Wyclef Jean, giving an interview."

Burman is then fed the man's real name from someone off camera, which he mishears and delivers to viewers. "Wahlay, excuse me, Wahlay. Got my artists mixed up."

About 30 seconds later it appears to dawn on Burman?as he looks down, perhaps at an off-camera note, stops mid-sentence and says, "Will.i.am, good grief, man I am tired. It's will.i.am, I'm sorry I'm mixing up my artists here. But either way, you kinda get the idea."

So, it wasn't a good, good night?for Burman and his Black Eyed Peas recall. At least the anchors back at the news desk were kind enough not to rub it in. We can't say the same for the Internet.

Australia abandons mandatory Internet filter plan

(AP) ? The Australian government has abandoned its 5-year-old pledge to mandate a filter blocking child pornography and other objectionable Internet content.

Communications Minister Stephen Conroy told Australian Broadcasting Corp. radio on Friday that instead of imposing a compulsory filter, Internet service providers have agreed to block a list of 1,400 websites.

Critics had said the proposed legislated filter would have put Australia in the same censorship league as China.

Anti-censorship campaigner Geordie Guy welcomed the government reversal. He said the new agreement will have little impact on the availability of child abuse material which isn't traded on the open Web.

State voters make history on gay marriage

By Allison Linn, NBC News

?

Voters in Maryland and Maine on Tuesday approved measures to allow same-sex marriage, the first time gay marriage has been approved by statewide popular votes.

In all, voters in four states ? Maine, Maryland, Washington and Minnesota? - considered ballot measures Tuesday on the issue of same-sex marriage.

Minnesota voters rejected a proposed constitutional amendment to define marriage as between a man and a woman by a margin of 51 percent to 49 percent, NBC News projected Wednesday morning. In Washington, the vote was still too close to call; however with just over half of the vote counted, the same-sex referendum was leading 52 to 48 percent,?according to NBC?s electoral map.

Proponents of same-sex marriage celebrating their first popular vote victories.

?Tonight we?ve taken the talking point away that marriage equality cannot win at the ballot box,? said Fred Sainz, vice president of communications with the Human Rights Campaign, which invested millions of dollars in same-sex marriage initiatives.

Sainz gave some of the?credit for the victory to President Barack Obama?s support for same-sex marriage.

The president said that his decision was informed by speaking with Americans including servicemen and women he met during the work to end Don?t Ask Don?t Tell.

Obama?s challenger, Mitt Romney, had said that he would support and champion legislation defining marriage as between a man and a woman.

Sainz said he thought Americans have become more understanding of why gay and lesbian couples want to marry.

?The hearts and minds of the American public have changed,? he said. ?For years now we?ve been having a long extended conversation and connecting with them about how marriage equality is about love, family and commitment, which are common human factors."

Opponents of same-sex marriage dismissed that argument, however. Brian Brown, president of the National Organization for Marriage, noted that dozens of states have passed laws in recent years defining marriage as between a man and a woman.

He called states like Maryland ?the most liberal of liberal states? and not a proxy for the general population.

?For the gay marriage groups to win in the most liberal states is not a tipping point at all,? Brown said.

The measures came as Americans appear to be growing more comfortable with the idea of gay marriage.

A?Pew Research Center?poll this summer found that 48 percent of Americans favor same-sex marriage, up from 31 percent in 2004.

Democrats were the strongest proponents, with 65 percent favoring same-sex marriage in the Pew survey. Only 24 percent of Republicans favor gay marriage, while 51 percent of independents favor it.

Although these are the first statewide voting victories for gay marriage, gay marriage has been legalized in some states through legislative or court action. Those include Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont, New Hampshire, New York and the District of Columbia, according to the National Council of State Legislatures.

More than 30 states, including Arizona, Colorado and Texas, have laws or constitutional provisions defining marriage as between a man and a woman, according to the National Council of State Legislatures.

Here?s a look at the four states that voted on the issue in this election.

Maine:?This was the second time voters in Maine were faced with a decision over same-sex marriage.?A bill allowing same-sex marriage was passed by the state legislature in 2006, but voters overturned it in 2009.

Maryland:?In Maryland, voters were asked to uphold a law allowing same-sex marriage that the governor signed into law last March.

Minnesota:?In Minnesota, voters were asked whether the state constitution should explicitly define marriage as between one man and one woman. Gay marriage is already banned under state law; writing the ban into to the constitution, proponents argued, would have protected the amendment from being overturned in the future.

Washington:?In Washington state, the legislature approved same-sex marriage earlier this year, and the law was scheduled to take effect in June. But opponents of the law were able to get a referendum on the ballot asking voters if they want to uphold the law.

World's Most Powerful Laser Facility Shifts Focus to Warheads

The U.S. National Ignition Facility will devote less time to energy research going forward, after failing to demonstrate the principles of a futuristic fusion power plant

NIF's lasers blast The NIF's lasers blast a tiny pellet containing isotopes of hydrogen to trigger fusion reactions. Image: Lawrence Livermore Natl Lab.

After an unsuccessful campaign to demonstrate the principles of a futuristic fusion power plant, the world?s most powerful laser facility is set to change course and emphasize its nuclear weapons research.

For the past six years, scientists and engineers at the US National Ignition Facility (NIF) have been working flat out to focus 192 laser beams on a gold-lined ?hohlraum? capsule, just a few millimeters long, containing a pellet of hydrogen isotopes. As 500 terawatts of laser power hits the capsule, it generates X-rays that blast into the pellet, causing the atoms of deuterium and tritium inside to fuse. The fusion converts a tiny amount of their mass into a burst of energy (see ?The NIF?s fusion strategy?).

The goal of the National Ignition Campaign (NIC) is reflected in its name: ?ignition?, in which the fusion reaction generates as much energy as the lasers supply. Success, NIF officials say, could pave the way to developing a power plant that would implode nearly 1,000 pellets a minute (see Nature 483, 133?134; 2012). But unexpected technical problems left the NIF well short of its goal when the campaign finally ended in September.

Now federal officials and the US Congress are preparing to set a new direction for the US$3.5-billion facility at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California. A series of reports commissioned by the government, Congress and the University of California, which administers the lab, are all due later this month. They are expected to outline plans to cut its time for ignition research from 80% to 50% and to give the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), which is responsible for maintaining the US nuclear arsenal, a more central role in determining the NIF?s priorities. The NNSA is planning to emphasize experiments that mimic conditions inside nuclear weapons, generating data to validate the computer codes used to check that the nation?s warheads remain viable ? essential work, given the voluntary moratorium on underground testing that began in 1992.

Nobody has given up on ignition, declares Donald Cook, deputy administrator for defense programs at the NNSA. But a new program for generating net energy will take a slower, more methodical approach. ?We?re now going to get right into the science of what issues are preventing ignition and work through them,? he says. ?But we believe that?s going to take a fair amount of work.?

Significant progress has already been made towards ignition, according to physicist Robert Byer at Stanford University in California, who is leading the University of California?s review of the NIF. ?The laser itself has been quite remarkable,? he says. One shot can deliver 1.85 megajoules of energy, roughly what the lab originally promised. The instruments used to study the pellet are also performing well, he says.

Yet on the basis of data obtained from the imploding pellets, researchers think that they are still far from reaching the conditions necessary for ignition. One problem seems to be that too much of the laser light is scattering back out of the capsule. Another is that the pellet is being squeezed asymmetrically, which lowers the pressure at its center. The asymmetry also causes the isotopes to mix unevenly, lowering the temperature in the pellet. ?Nature pushes back: that?s my shorthand version of what?s going on,? Byer says.

Nature isn?t the only one pushing back ? the NIF?s funders in Congress also want answers. ?We?re disappointed,? says one congressional staff member, who spoke to Nature only on condition on anonymity. Critics say that the lab?s enthusiastic promotion of the idea that laser fusion could generate electrical power led many in Congress to believe that they were funding an energy project, when in fact laser fusion is decades from producing electricity. ?The lab overemphasized and oversold the energy aspect of the NIF, at the expense of the very important and successful work it was doing in stockpile stewardship and basic science,? says a senior scientist familiar with the NIF program.

Sometimes you just need a kick in the butt to be more productive, and Mikey delivers.

Discover Your Strengths to Be More Productive
By Mikey ?Pancakes? Whitfield

One thing that made me feel better about my own time management issues is knowing that even Craig Ballantyne used to go through a vicious time wasting cycle.

I can relate. We all can.

That vicious cycle impacted my productivity. I?m sure you?re familiar with it.

You read your emails. You go to ESPN.com, then NFL.com, and finally, IHOP?s website to see when their next all-you-can-eat pancake special is going on. Then it?s back to your emails.

Yeah. The IHOP thing might be just mine. C?mon. Pancakes? I?m smiling just saying that word.

Anyway, you have hopefully overcome that obstacle by now, and if you haven?t, I strongly encourage you to use Craig?s ?Structure Your Day? method. It?s very powerful. It has no
doubt tripled my productivity.

You can see how I structure my day with a whiteboard here:

Today, I want to tell you how you can triple your productivity using your strengths. Mine are:

1. Writing
2. Creating Products

Your strengths will differ from mine, and that?s OK. As you evolve moving your online business forward, you will discover what your unique strengths are. This does take time.

There are so many avenues to online success that it can be overwhelming. There are media buys, facebook ads, SEO, affiliate recruiting, product creation and much more. You might be trying to get really good at all of them. Let me tell you, that?s a big mistake.

My SEO skills are about a two on a scale of one to ten. I understand that, so I don?t force myself to learn all the Google tricks. I have no idea what keywords are used to land on my blog.

To be blunt, I really don?t care. That?s not my strength.

My strength is to wow my readers with my emails so that they are entertained and educated at the same time, keeping them as loyal readers.

Because I have systemized my approach to creating products, I can create a product about ten times faster than my original one.

More products = more value.

That?s why my goal is to run two promos a month for the rest of 2012.

That?s a winning situation because I love writing and creating products. I despise doing keyword research.

Then there are people who are incredible with numbers. Rick Kaselj is currently running 3,468 split tests on his blog and sales sites.

Well, it?s not that many, but his strengths are knowing his numbers extremely well, and because of that, he has built a very successful online business.

Then there are people like Mike Geary who can thrive off of one product because he knows the ins and outs of buying media.

So, sit down and simply ask yourself, ?What is it that I love doing and I?m good at??, then leverage those strengths to propel your online business forward.

Don?t try to be good at everything. Be amazing at just a couple of things, and your business will triple.

To discovering your strengths,

Mike Whitfield
