T-Mobile offering 200MB of free LTE for any tablet with no strings attached

T-Mobile

The first taste is free

T-Mobile has announced a new way to try their network with your LTE-enabled tablet. As part of the Un-carrier 3.0 initiative, users — even those who are not a current T-Mobile customer — will receive 200MB of free LTE data on any eligible device every 30 days. This offer is good for tablets purchased through T-Mobile, or any compatible device you may already have or have purchased elsewhere. Users who already have a tablet data plan with T-Mobile will get an extra 200MB monthly. this offer will last for the life of the device.

This won't work like the current Simple Choice plans. Once you use the "free" bandwidth, you're shut off instead of being throttled. You'll be given an opportunity to sign up for a day pass, or any other plan, but you can always choose to just disconnect until your 30-day cycle refreshes. Current customers won't have to do anything for the extra data bucket, their plan will be automatically adjusted to take advantage of the new offer.

This all goes into effect November 1. CEO John Legere was also quick to mention that they're not done yet with their Un-carrier program. Will bring you more if and when it happens, but for now be sure to click the link below to get all the information, and you can always hit up @TMobile with questions on Twitter.

Mayor helps new theater dedication in Brooklyn

(AP) — New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, director Julie Taymor and actor Mark Rylance gathered Tuesday in Brooklyn to help cut the ribbon for a jewel box-sized, shiny new theater, the first permanent home for Theatre for a New Audience in its 34 year existence.

It is the city's first new theater designed expressly for Shakespeare and classic drama since 1965, and is the first permanent home for the itinerant company, which was founded in 1979 by Jeffrey Horowitz. He estimates it will attract an audience of between 30,000-to-40,000, many public school children.

"Friends, Romans, Brooklynites," the mayor intoned inside the $69 million theater, which was created with public and private pledges. "Lend me your ears. We come not to praise Shakespeare, but to stage him."

In addition to a 299-seat main theater, the 27,500-square-foot company's home also houses a 50-seat rehearsal space and a lobby cafe. It overlooks a new public garden plaza and sits along a walking path between the Brooklyn Academy of Music's Opera House and Harvey Theater. The city pledged some $34 million to the project.

Designed by Hugh Hardy of H3 Hardy Collaboration Architecture, the new theater has a large glass facade, gunmetal gray panels, a 35-foot-tall main stage, a second-floor lobby and a central staircase. The building went up in a former parking lot and has been named the Polonsky Shakespeare Center after a gift from the Polonsky Foundation.

The new theater boasts an ability to morph into seven different stage and seating configurations. Hardy said building it posed an interesting challenge: "How do you make a small building important?" The answer was to tilt the square structure and help it stand out by using glass and shiny metal.

"I can imagine a child coming in here and saying, 'Yeah, but it's empty. It's got nothing in it,'" said Rylance, the two-time Tony Award-winning English actor who is alternating between starring in "Twelfth Night" and "Richard III" on Broadway. "It's wonderful for plays. It doesn't have a character that forces itself on you. It's a neutral space that is waiting for the words of the actors to fill it."

Taymor, of "The Lion King" and "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark" fame, has accepted the theater's invitation to direct the official 2013 inaugural production, "A Midsummer Night's Dream." Taymor has already directed four plays for the troupe, including Carlo Gozzi's "The Green Bird," which moved to Broadway in 2000.

Taymor has already been hard at work getting "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and her cast of 36 ready for its Nov. 2 opening. "I've been in the dark. Oh, I shouldn't have said that," she joked, referring to her rocky ride with the comic book musical.

"I love being here. It's the perfect play to open this theater because it is a blessing of the house," she said. "The theater is flexible and it's small and intimate. How many times do you get a space that's dedicated to that and dedicated to experimentation?"

He’s scheduled to be christened later today (October 23) and Prince George Alexander Louis has quite a list of loved ones that have been selected as his godparents.

However, obvious choices like Uncle Prince Harry and Aunt Pippa Middleton were both skipped when Prince William and Kate Middleton sat down to pick the lucky few.

Instead, Zara Phillips, Princess Royal Anne, William van Custem, Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, Oliver Baker, Emilia Jardine-Paterson, Earl Grosvenor, and Julia Samuel are all listed as potential godparents to Prince George should anything happen to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

Little George will be christened at St. James Palace in London in front of a congregation that will also include Queen Elizabeth, Prince Philip, Prince Charles, Duchess Camilla, and Michael and Carole Middleton.

Sony Explains Why Its PlayStation 4 Costs $1,845 In Brazil

Sony announced U.S. and European prices for its new PlayStation 4 at a news conference this summer. The game system will cost some $1,845 in Brazil, angering fans.

Sony announced U.S. and European prices for its new PlayStation 4 at a news conference this summer. The game system will cost some $1,845 in Brazil, angering fans.

Eric Thayer/Getty Images

Sony's new PlayStation 4 won't be on store shelves until next month, but the gaming console has already raised eyebrows in Brazil, after reports that it would cost 3,999 Brazilian real — or about $1,845 at today's exchange rate.

The company says the steep cost isn't a case of price gouging, but instead a sign of Brazil's heavy taxes and fees on imported electronics.

The game system will be released in the United States on Nov. 15 and in countries including Brazil later that month. Large retailers in the U.S. will offer the PS4 at a base price of around $400.

This week, negative public response to the high cost in Brazil led Mark Stanley, Sony general manager for Latin America, to offer an explanation for the high price tag in a post on the company's Brazilian PlayStation blog.

Stanely said about the high retail price, "it's not good for our gamers and it's not good for the PlayStation brand," in remarks published by the Gamespot blog.

Of the $1,845 price, 63 percent goes toward paying import taxes that are imposed on the PlayStation 4 when it's imported to Brazil, Sony says.

Stanley's blog post included a graphic breaking down the costs, listing the "transfer cost" of importing the system as 21.5 percent, or nearly $400. An additional 22 percent represents the margin for Sony and retailers. His numbers totaled 106.5 percent of the final price in Brazil, which is arrived at after assessing a 6.5 percent discount, Stanley says.

Sony says the price of the new PlayStation could come down "significantly" if it's able to shift production of the consoles to Brazil. The system is currently being produced at only one factory, in China, according to Brazil's Valor Economico.

In his blog post, Stanley also thanked Sony customers for sending "thousands of passionate comments."

After the price was announced in a post on Sony Brazil's blog last week, more than 1,250 people commented on it, with many of them expressing their displeasure.

"There goes my Christmas present," one prospective customer wrote.

Others said that at that price, it could be cheaper simply to fly to the United States, pick up a console, and fly back home with it.

Some also noted that Sony's rivals are able to get gaming consoles on the market at a lower price. Microsoft, for instance, has set a price for its upcoming Xbox One at around 2,200 real — a bit more than $1,000.

But as NPR's Lourdes Garcia-Navarro tells us from Brazil, it's common to see high prices for electronics there. "It's a good indicator of the expense of imported electronic goods here," she says.

A Look At Violations In Nuke Force

Air Force officers entrusted with launch keys to nuclear-tipped intercontinental ballistic missiles have been caught leaving open a blast door aimed at helping prevent a terrorist or other intruder from entering their underground command post, officials tell The Associated Press. A look at key elements of the violations by two sets of Air Force officers:

— In both cases earlier this year the missile crew commander and the deputy crew commander were disciplined for having left open the blast door to their underground launch control center while one of them was napping. That is a violation of a written rule meant to protect the command post from a potential intruder.

— At Malmstrom Air Force Base, Mont., the person who had been asleep initially lied about the door being open but later confessed, saying her crew commander had encouraged her to lie.

— At Minot Air Force Base, N.D., one of the crew members acknowledged having committed the same transgression numerous times without getting caught.

— The Air Force says that in neither case was the security of the nuclear missile was not compromised, due to other safeguards in place.

These violations are in addition to a number of other problems within the Air Force nuclear missile force revealed this year by The Associated Press:

— In April, 19 missile crew members in the 91st Missile Wing at Minot were deemed temporarily unfit for duty and given weeks of remedial training. The wing's deputy commander of operations complained of "rot" in the force. Later, the officer in charge of the 91st's missile crew training and proficiency was relieved of duty.

— A RAND Corp. survey of officers and airmen in the missile force found complaints about poor leadership, poor working conditions and concern that they were in a dead-end career field.

— In August the 341st Missile Wing at Malmstrom failed a safety and security inspection. Nine days later the officer in charge of security forces there was relieved of duty.

— Earlier this month the Air Force fired Maj. Gen. Michael Carey, commander of the 20th Air Force, which is responsible for the entire Minuteman 3 missile force, amid an investigation of an alcohol-related complaint.

(AP) — Marriage is coming after the baby carriage for Kim Kardashian and Kanye West.

Kardashian's publicist, Ina Treciokas, confirmed Tuesday that the couple are engaged.

E! News first reported that West proposed to Kardashian Monday — her 33rd birthday — in front of family and friends at the AT&T Park, home of the San Francisco Giants.

Kardashian gave birth to the couple's first child, daughter North West, in June.

A photo posted on Instagram shows a screen at the stadium that reads "PLEEEASE MARRY MEEE!!!" — in typical West font — above a black-clad orchestra. Another shows Kardashian showing off a diamond ring with a smiling West behind her.

The Kardashian clan has a series of reality shows on E!, and, after initially saying it didn't have cameras at the stadium, the network said late Tuesday it did have cameras there to capture the moment.

Khloe Kardashian seemed to celebrate on Twitter when she wrote: "Tears of JOY!!!!!!! Wow!!!!!!" She also tweeted: "Wow!!!!! Am I dreaming??!?!" Kimye were quiet on Twitter.

Kardashian was previously married to NBA player Kris Humphries. Their divorce was finalized in June after they were married for 72 days in 2011. Her first marriage was to music producer Damon Thomas in 2000.

West is currently on a tour with Kendrick Lamar. "The Yeezus Tour" will visit the SAP Center in San Jose on Tuesday night. Earlier Monday, he attended the Hollywood Film Awards in Beverly Hills, presenting Steve McQueen with the Hollywood Breakout Director Award.

University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center

HOUSTON -- Two leaders at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center have been elected to the Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the National Academies in recognition of their contributions to medical science and health care.

Election of Waun Ki Hong, M.D., head of Cancer Medicine, and Helen Piwnica-Worms, Ph.D., vice provost, science, by members of the elite institution was announced Monday by the IOM.

"Membership in the Institute of Medicine is powerful recognition by outstanding peers of the impact Dr. Hong and Dr. Piwnica-Worms have had as researchers and leaders in advancing our understanding and treatment of cancer," said Ethan Dmitrovsky, M.D., provost and executive vice president at MD Anderson.

"Their election reflects two truths about MD Anderson today. Waun Ki Hong personifies the institution's established excellence in patient care and research. Helen Piwnica-Worms is an exceptional scientist who came to MD Anderson recently to help carry out our mission to eradicate cancer," Dmitrovsky said.

Membership in the IOM recognizes people who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and commitment to service.

"It's an honor to welcome our highly distinguished colleagues to the Institute of Medicine," said IOM President Harvey V. Fineberg. "These individuals have inspired us through their achievements in research, teaching, clinical work, and other contributions to the medical field. Their knowledge and skills will deeply enrich the IOM."

Leaders in clinical, translational research

As vice provost, Piwnica-Worms oversees MD Anderson's preclinical research, which seeks to better understand the precise mechanisms of malignant cells, forming the basis for identifying new targets and developing new treatment.

Trained as a basic scientist, her research identified an important molecular pathway and drug target that led her into translational research -- moving scientific findings from lab to clinic -- to collaborate with clinicians on two clinical trials.

"I'm incredibly honored to be elected to the IOM and grateful for the dedicated collaborators and postdoctoral fellows who are so important to any successful effort in this challenging field," Piwnica-Worms said.

Her research focuses on new drug combinations for triple-negative breast cancer and is tied into MD Anderson's Breast and Ovarian Cancer Moon Shot. Piwnica-Worms came to MD Anderson earlier this year after 19 years at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

MD Anderson's Moon Shots Program is designed to speed the pace of converting scientific discoveries into clinical advances that reduce cancer deaths.

Hong leads the division that encompasses MD Anderson's clinical oncology departments.

"For an academician, anyone involved in research, patient care and education, election to the IOM is a great honor," Hong said. "I must thank the wonderful colleagues and trainees who have been so important to the teamwork required to advance our knowledge of cancer and apply it to help our patients."

Hong's clinical and translational research was instrumental in opening entirely new approaches to cancer prevention and treatment. He pioneered treatment that spared affected organs from surgical removal; provided proof of principle for chemoprevention -- the treatment of precancerous lesions to prevent disease; and led a path-breaking clinical trial in targeted therapy that used patient lung cancer tumor biopsies to match treatment to tumor.

MD Anderson's Lung Cancer Moon Shot incorporates Hong's leadership in targeted therapies.

Seven IOM members at MD Anderson

With the addition of Piwnica-Worms and Hong, MD Anderson has seven IOM members: President Ronald DePinho, M.D.; John Mendelsohn, M.D., former president and director of the Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan Institute for Personalized Cancer Therapy; Ellen Gritz, Ph.D., chair of Behavioral Science; James Allison, Ph.D., chair of Immunology; and Lynda Chin, M.D., chair of Genomic Medicine and scientific director of the Institute for Applied Cancer Science.

###

Established in 1970, the IOM also serves an important advisory role, with panels of members volunteering to study important issues in medical science, health care and public health. IOM projects during the past year include studies of the benefits of including physical activity in the school environment, direct health outcomes of sodium intake, regional variations in Medicare spending, child abuse and neglect in the U.S., improved delivery of cancer care, the commercial sexual exploitation and sex trafficking of minors in the U.S., post-deployment needs of Iraq and Afghanistan service members, gun violence research priorities and the problem of illegitimate and substandard medications.

Ultra-Orthodox Town's Election Puts Gender Rules To The Test

Candidates for town council Michal Chernovitsky (left) and Adina Ruhamkin campaign in a park in El'ad, or Forever God, a small religious community in Israel. They could be the first women on El'ad's council, and the first ultra-Orthodox women to win public office in Israel.

Emily Harris/NPR

Voters across Israel choose new mayors and city councilors in local elections on Tuesday. In one small town, a handful of ultra-Orthodox Jewish women are defying the norms of their community by running for office.

On a recent day, children mob two women in skirts, stockings and purple T-shirts in a neighborhood park in El'ad, or Forever God. The women are candidates for town council. As part of their get-the-word-out campaign, they're blowing up balloons for kids.

"I've been thinking about this for a year. I think it's crucial that women be represented on the town council," Michal Chernovitsky, the 33-year-old leader of the five female candidates running. "Because there are just men now, a lot of issues get lost."

Their slogan is "Mothers for El'ad." The town is young, just 13 years old. It was built specifically as a strict religious community, and the town spends extra money on synagogues and other religious institutions. No one is allowed to drive here on the Sabbath, and few residents subscribe to TV or Internet.

All that is fine with Adina Ruhamkin, another Mothers candidate, but what El'ad needs, she says, are basic services for children, and the moms who take care of their daily needs.

"There's no library, nothing here ... It's like a hotel," Ruhamkin says. "You come to sleep in town, and leave the town. That's what's there; nothing.

Among the Mothers' pitches: build a library and a swimming pool, increase bus service and add more stops. They also want to create jobs, for men and women. One voter at the park, a mother of nine, is hesitantly supportive.

"I've never heard before of women running for council," she says. "It's a new thing. I hope it will be accepted, but I'm not so sure. Here women who express themselves aren't seen as a good thing."

As these candidates hand out balloons, a car from another city council campaign drives by, touting over a loudspeaker the endorsements it's won from various rabbis. There are many ultra-orthodox elected officials in Israel — none are women.

Racheli Ibenboim might have become one. She was supposed to be on the Jerusalem ballot for city council, but community pressure led her to drop out.

"My children were threatened that they would not be able to stay at their schools," Ibenboim says. "My husband was told he wouldn't be able to attend our synagogue anymore. His employers even got a phone call saying they should let him go."

She got many messages of support too, but felt her particular ultra-Orthodox sect just wasn't ready for a woman to run for public office.

"When I had to decide whether to stay a part of my sect or take on this political task, I thought it was more important to try to create change from within," she says.

As Israel's ultra-Orthodox population has grown, its strict gender rules have crept into other parts of society. Rachel Azaria is not ultra-Orthodox, but is devout, religiously observant, and an elected member of the Jerusalem City Council. She helped lead a fight against public bus lines that made women sit in the back. Azaria says many ultraorthodox women secretly called her during the campaign to thank her for her efforts, albeit in hushed tones.

Azaria believes with time, more ultra-Orthodox women will seek to make their voices heard in politics. Back in El'ad, or Forever God, the Mothers team is hopeful they will win at least one town council seat. But they are in unfamiliar territory, says candidate Adina Ruhamkin.

"It's weird. We're not yet in, but weird," she says. "Because we are women and everybody [else] are men, and it's going to be weird.

After polls close Tuesday night, Forever God may indeed change.

Betty White Spoofs Miley Cyrus For Her TV Show

Please GODS let this KILL that stupid wrecking ball

Ever since Miley Cyrus stripped herself nekkid to ride a wrecking ball in the music video for her #1 song Wrecking Ball, people all over the place have been spoofing her antics. Today, we learn that the one and only Betty White decided to hop on the bandwagon and ride a wrecking ball to promote the new season of her show Betty White’s Off Their Rockers. Thankfully, Betty remains fully clothed in the promo … check it out below.

Yo, Hulk Hogan, we’re going to let you finish—but Betty White had one of the best “Wrecking Ball” parodies of all time! That’s right, the latest star to channel her inner Miley Cyrus and hop aboard a piece of construction equipment is none other than 91-year-old Betty White! So what exactly is going on? Betty has teamed up with Lifetime to promote the news that her new show, Betty White’s Off Their Rockers has found a new home on Lifetime. And to spread the word, she’s taking cues from pop culture! While on the wrecking ball, Betty asks for a sledgehammer—though she keeps it PG and doesn’t opt for the French kiss, thankfully! Tune into Betty White’s Off Their Rockers Wednesdays at 9 PM on Lifetime!

LOL. I mean, this wrecking ball thing has been done to death but I do kinda love that Betty was game for giving it a go. BUT, as much as I am charmed by this, I hope this is the end. Seriously. Let it be done, peoples. No one will ride a wrecking ball or lick a sledgehammer better than Betty White. The matter is now closed for good. Right?
