BERLIN (AP) ? The road to heaven is paved with more than good intentions for Germany's 24 million Catholics. If they don't pay their religious taxes, they will be denied sacraments, including weddings, baptisms and funerals.
A decree issued last week by the country's bishops cast a spotlight on the longstanding practice in Germany and a handful of other European countries in which governments tax registered believers and then hand over the money to the religious institutions.
In Germany, Catholics, Protestants and Jews pay a surcharge of up to nine percent on their income tax bills ? or about ?56 ($72) a month for a single person earning a pre-tax monthly salary of about ?3,500 ($4,500).
For religious institutions, struggling to maintain their congregations in a secular society where the Protestant Reformation began 500 years ago, the tax revenues are vital.
The Catholic Church in Germany receives about ?5 billion ($6.5 billion) annually from the surcharge. For Protestants, the total is just above ?4 billion ($5.2 billion). Donations, in turn, represent a far smaller share of the churches' income than in the United States.
With rising prices and economic uncertainty, however, more and more Catholics and Protestants are opting to save their money and declare to tax authorities they are no longer church members, even if they still consider themselves believers.
"I quit the church already in 2007," Manfred Gonschor, a Munich-based IT-consultant, said. "It was when I got a bonus payment and realized that I could have paid myself a nice holiday alone on the amount of church tax that I was paying on it."
Gonschor added he was also "really fed up with the institution and its failures."
Such defections have hit the Catholic Church especially hard ? it has lost about 181,000 tax-paying members in 2010 and 126,000 a year later, according to official figures. Protestants, who number about 24 million nationwide, lost 145,000 registered members in Germany in 2010, the most recent year from which figures are available.
But the figures include some people who still want to baptize their children, take communion on major religious holidays, marry in a religious ceremony and receive Christian burials.
The group We are Church, which claims to represent tens of thousands of grassroots Catholics, said many Germans stop paying the tax because they disagree with the church's policies or simply want to save money ? not because they have lost their faith.
"I haven't quit because I still think that I might want to get married in a church one day, even though I know that's absurd," said Anna Ainsley, a 31-old-year banker and a Protestant from Frankfurt. "But when I see my tax declaration, then I think every year that I should finally quit."
Those are the people that Germany's Catholic bishops had in mind when they decreed on Sept. 20 that stopping the payment of religious taxes was "a serious lapse" and those who did so would then be excluded from a range of church activities.
"This decree makes clear that one cannot partly leave the Church," the bishops said in a statement. "It is not possible to separate the spiritual community of the Church from the institutional Church."
Wavering Catholics will now be sent letters reminding them of the consequences of avoiding the church tax, including losing access to all sacraments.
"Maybe you haven't considered the consequences of your decision and would like to reverse this step," a draft of the letter states.
Protestants have taken a less stern position, saying non-taxpayers are still welcome to attend services and take communion. But becoming a godparent, getting married in a church or taking a job in church-affiliated institutions such as hospitals or kindergartens are off-limits to those who stop paying their taxes.
Switzerland and Austria also tax Catholic and Protestant church members. In Denmark, the State Lutheran church collects a tax from its members. Members of Sweden's Lutheran Church pay around 1 percent of their income, collected by the national tax authorities, just as in Finland.
In Italy, tax-payers have the choice of diverting a small part of their income taxes to religious institutions, including the Catholic Church and the country's Jewish community, but the contribution is voluntary.
In none of those countries have the churches taken such a firm stand against dropouts.
So far German courts have stood by the bishops' decision. This week the country's top administrative court threw out a lawsuit against the archdiocese of Freiburg by retired theologian Hartmut Zapp, who has spent years fighting the Catholic Church over the tax.
Zapp argued that a Catholic should be free to stop paying but remain a member of the spiritual community and that his religious beliefs could not possibly be tied to a tax payment.
The archdiocese responded in a statement that "those who lack solidarity bid farewell to the community of believers."
The tax issue presents moral and ethical dilemmas to millions of German believers, even dividing couples.
Sonja Trott, a 34-year-old teacher from Munich, said she quit the Catholic Church 15 years ago because she no longer believed in its teachings.
"Now I'd like to convince my husband that he also should quit, that would save us a lot of money," she said.
But her husband, Christoph, a sales executive, says he cannot imagine refusing to pay on moral grounds because it would seem like a betrayal of his faith. "I don't like paying it, but I do because I fear the step of quitting the church."
He would prefer to donate part of the money to charities "but well, in Germany the payment determines whether I'm allowed to consider myself a Catholic or not."
For other Germans, it's unethical to stop paying the tax but continue to use the church when it suits them.
Christine Solf, a Munich-based consultant, says she doesn't attend services regularly but appreciates the church's charitable work. For her, church membership is also a family tradition.
"I know people who quit for financial reasons but then still want their children to be baptized. That's not OK in my opinion," she said.

HuffPost Live's Alicia Menendez explores why the Pentagon's methods for dealing with substance abuse aren't working and what soldiers need to help them in such times.
Soldiers are trained to deal with life or death situations during deployment, but many don't find relief even after they return home. Returning with bodily injuries, mental disorders, or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and finding no avenue of dealing with these issues, many may turn to alcohol for comfort.
According to the Millennium Cohort Study soldiers who are deployed and exposed to combat, "are at increased risk of new-onset heavy weekly drinking, binge drinking, and other alcohol-related problems."
Don Lipsteen shared the heartbreaking story of his son, who had done two tours in Iraq with the U.S. Navy only to come home and find out he had a brain tumor.
"He was able to get supplies from his mother, who thought she was doing a lot of good by supplying him with the drugs, the barbiturates that he was taking," Lipsteen said of his son. "Unfortunately that proved that that was not helpful at all, and he did take his own life, strung out on heroin by the time he did."
"The problem is once somebody becomes dependent we know that most of them are not gonna simply be able to just say no, and they need treatment," Bob Newman, scientific advisor at Nerium Biotechnology told Menendez. "The good news is that treatment is available, its been tried and true for decades, but the Department of Defense and the Department of Veterans Affairs has an exclusion saying we will not pay for the gold standard of treatment, and that's irrationale, its insanity and its very, very inappropriate."
According to a 2008 study, 20 percent of soldiers in active service having 5 or more drinks a day, and the 2011 study from the National Institute of Drug Abuse reports that 20 percent of active and 42 percent of reserve soldiers need mental health treatment.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Republicans on Thursday fired a vendor suspected of submitting 108 questionable new voter registrations in Florida's Palm Beach County, ground zero for disputed ballots in 2000's presidential race.
The Republican Party of Florida used Virginia-based Strategic Allied Consulting to help register and turnout voters in Florida, one of a shrinking handful of states President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney are contesting. The Florida state party had paid the firm more than $1.3 million so far, and the Republican National Committee used the group for almost $3 million of work in Nevada, North Carolina, Colorado and Virginia.
"We have zero tolerance for any threat to the integrity of elections. When we were informed of an alleged incident we immediately cut all ties to the company," RNC Communications Director Sean Spicer said.
The state party similarly sought to distance itself from the firm and its main operative, Nathan Sproul.
"We immediately informed the Republican National Committee that we were terminating the contract with the voter-registration vendor we hired at their request because there is no place for voter-registration fraud in Florida," state Republican Party Executive Director Mike Grissom said in a statement.
Strategic Allied Consulting said the suspected forms came from one person and the company was cooperating with elections officials in Florida.
"Strategic has a zero-tolerance policy for breaking the law," said Fred Petti, a company attorney. "Accordingly, once we learned of the irregularities in Palm Beach County, we were able to trace all questionable cards to one individual and immediately terminated our working relationship with the individual in question."
The company did not identify the individual.
Polls show Obama increasing his lead over Romney in Florida, a hard-fought state that hosted the GOP's convention last month. If Romney were to lose Florida and its 29 electoral votes, he would have to sweep other battleground states of Ohio, Virginia, Wisconsin, Colorado, Iowa, Nevada and New Hampshire to win the White House.
Palm Beach County Elections Supervisor Susan Bucher's staff noticed signatures that looked alike and incomplete forms submitted on Sept. 5 by Strategic Allied Consulting. Bucher met with prosecutors on Monday to request an investigation.
Palm Beach County was at the center of the ballot recount in 2000, with George W. Bush and Al Gore both contesting the results that seemed to give Reform Party nominee Pat Buchanan an unusually strong showing. Critics ? and legions of attorneys ? said the ballot design led many Gore supporters to cast votes for Buchanan.
The subsequent questions that arose about how ballots should be tabulated made their way to the U.S. Supreme Court, which settled the bitter contest in a 5-4 ruling barring a ballot recount. Bush won.
Sproul, a longtime GOP operative who leads Strategic Allied Consulting, previously worked for Romney's campaign through a separate firm, Lincoln Strategy Group. Romney spokeswoman Sarah Pompei says the campaign has not used Sproul since 2011, when the campaign was using Lincoln to collect signatures to get on primary ballots.
The deadline to register in Florida for Nov. 6's election is Oct. 9.

Texas Instruments has announced it will stop investing in mobile chips, and turn its attention to the "embedded processor" market instead.
The saying goes ?when the going gets tough, the tough get going,? however it appears Texas Instruments took it in a slightly different way to the rest of us, as it has announced it?s taking a step back from the incredibly competitive mobile processor market.
It was TI?s Senior VP of Embedded Processing Greg Delagi who announced the news at an investor meeting on September 25, saying ?the [smartphone] opportunity is less attractive as we go forward,? and talked about the market being ?dominated by a couple of players.?
While Texas Instruments may not be as well-known as Qualcomm or Nvidia, it is America?s second largest chip manufacturer and its OMAP processors can be found in devices such as the Amazon Kindle tablet, B&N?s new Nook tablets, a wide variety of Huawei smartphones, the Panasonic Eluga, several Motorola Droids and Kobo?s new range of Android tablets too.
Texas Instruments may be taking a step back, but it?s not a total retreat, as Delagi promised that it would continue to support smartphones and tablets that use OMAP chips, but wouldn?t be dedicating the same level of investment as it had done in the past.
What this will mean for the forthcoming OMAP 5 isn?t clear. This exciting chip is expected to start appearing in devices towards the end of this year or early next, and uses ARM?s dual-core Cortex A15 architecture, much like Samsung?s Exynos 5 Dual. A video showing an early test indicated the OMAP 5 was set to be quite a beast, so let?s hope it?s still on its way.
So what will Texas Instruments be doing instead? It?s going to concentrate on something called ?embedded processing,? where chips are used in appliances, big industrial machinery and most importantly, cars. Delagi showed the embedded processing market to be worth $18 billion, and that the automotive slice of that pie was worth $6.5 billion alone.
The news has seen Texas Instruments? stock take a fall, and analysts voice their concern over the decision. That said, others predict that if embedded processing takes off, the move could be very profitable.

Until last week, Fiona Apple was best known for her Grammy-award winning music career, but now the singer's health and legal problems are at the forefront of her fans' attention.
Apple looked sickly skinny when she performed at a concert in New Orleans on Tuesday night, and her emaciated appearance and recent drug arrest have sparked concern among health experts that she may be struggling to deal with the stress in her life, RadarOnline.com is exclusively reporting.
As we previously reported, the Every Single Night star was busted for marijuana possession on September 19 when it was found on her tour bus during a routine check at a border stop in the Texas town of Sierra Blanca.
PHOTOS: Sexy Stars Who Have Been Arrested
While the 35-year-old spoke of drinking ?marijuana-laced lemonade? and smoking pot with writer Dan Lee earlier this year, her shockingly thin figure doesn't look typical of a stoner, nutritionist Dr. Fred Pescatore, who has not treated the singer, told RadarOnline.com in an exclusive interview.
"She does look gaunt and pot is usually not the only culprit in that situation," he speculated.
"It looks as if she is in a downward spiral and that may be causing her to be apathetic to how she appears," said Dr. Pescatore, who estimates that the 5'2" singer has lost 30 pounds and plummeted to a low of 90 pounds.
PHOTOS: Celebrities Who Have Admitted To Smoking Pot
It is not the first time that Fiona has undergone a dramatic weight loss. Back in 1997, it was speculated that Apple suffered from an eating disorder with The New Yorker claiming she ?looked like an underfed Calvin Klein model.?
Psychotherapist Jessica Aronson, who has not treated Apple, told Radar that she is concerned the singer, who admitted to battling an eating disorder in her teens following a horrific sexual assault when she was only 12 years old, may be returning to old bad habits to help deal with her current situation.
PHOTOS: Celebrity Mugshots
"I would guess she is numbing herself from something? - most likely feelings," said Aronson. "Being in the public eye and getting arrested for drug use brings attention to herself and highlights whatever difficulty she is going through.
"Her pictures certainly look alarming and concerning," revealed the psychotherapist.

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? A study published in Science magazine and co-authored by Bren School Sustainable Fisheries Group (SFG) researchers and their colleagues confirms suspicions that thousands of "data-poor" fisheries, representing some 80 percent of the world's fisheries, are in decline but could recover with proper management.
The authors of "Status and Solutions for the World's Unassessed Fisheries" also found that taking quick action to allow depleted stocks to recover to sustainable levels could result in future catches that are 8 to 40 percent larger than are predicted if current unsustainable fishing practices continue.
The findings were made possible by a new assessment technique developed by the researchers, which allowed them to determine fish population status using far less data than are required by a traditional stock assessment, which is both expensive and time-consuming and impractical for a high percentage of the world's fisheries. Substantial population data are available for only about 20 percent of the world's 10,000 fish stocks, and those well-studied fisheries tend to be in better shape than fisheries for which little data exist.
"For most fisheries, we simply didn't know how many fish were out there and whether their populations were trending up or down," says lead author and Bren School professor of economics Christopher Costello. "Without good information on fish populations, it can be hard to manage sustainably. It's like trying to decide how far you can drive your car without knowing how much gas is in the tank."
Further, Costello explains, lacking sound estimates for a stock's population, "Political pressure tends to dominate decision making, and we end up catching too much. Over time, this can lead a fishery to collapse."
Co-author and Bren School dean, Steve Gaines, describes the data-rich 20 percent of fisheries as "a tiny slice that can give us a skewed view" of the health of global fisheries.
The authors caution that the new assessment method cannot take the place of formal assessment programs for individual fisheries, but they do provide accurate global and regional information that can be used to inform fisheries management decisions. "Using these tools at a regional scale, we can gain up to 80 percent of the insights of traditional assessment approaches at just 1 percent of the cost," says Gaines.
The tool enabled the researchers to provide a new global status report that includes these previously unmeasured fisheries, bringing thousands of what managers call "unassessed" fisheries into focus. The results show that more than half of the world's fisheries are in decline and that, across the globe, stocks for which robust data exist are doing better than those that are less-studied, regardless of which country manages them.
"If we look at assessed stocks, we can be pretty satisfied that fishery management systems are generally working to ensure long-term sustainability," says University of Washington scientist and co-author Ray Hilborn. "For previously unassessed stocks, this doesn't appear to be true."
An interesting finding -- again, made possible by employing this new assessment tool for data-poor fisheries -- is that in large-scale fisheries, stocks that are measured and tracked are at similar levels as those that that have not been formally measured. But under current fishing pressure, their futures look very different: the assessed stocks are starting to show signs of recovery, while fisheries for which little data exists continue to decline. Further, in small-scale fisheries, data-poor stocks are in far worse shape than their well-studied counterparts, and many are plummeting at alarming rates. These small-scale, data-poor fisheries are critical to local food security in many parts of the world.
While the impact on food security is most significant for local-level (small-scale) fisheries in poorer countries, explains co-author, UCSB ecologist, and SFG scientist Sarah Lester, "This isn't just a developing-world problem. Small, unassessed fisheries in the U.S. and Europe are often in as bad a shape as those in the developing world."
While many of the world's fisheries are in trouble, the authors suggest that the majority of them can still rebound with better management.
"Strong management could increase the number of fish in the ocean by more than 50 percent," says Gaines. "When fish populations are healthy they produce more young. It may seem paradoxical, but we can get more fish on our plates by leaving more in the water."
Time is of the essence. "These fisheries can rebound," Costello says, "but the longer we wait, the harder and more costly it will be to bring them back. In another ten years, the window of opportunity may have closed."
The study in Science is part of a larger study titled "Charting a Course to Sustainable Fisheries," released this week by the consulting firm California Environmental Associates. It evaluates successes and gaps in fishery management and conservation programs around the world, highlighting the fact that while methods for returning dwindling fisheries to health are understood, political battles often prevent them from being put into action.
The report shows that where gains are being made, such as in the U.S., where many large fisheries are starting to recover, they result from a combination of efforts: relying on strong science to set total allowable fishing levels, closing some areas to allow for stock rebuilding, and using sustainable seafood markets and rights-based management strategies that give fishermen secure access to a proportion of catch. The report shows that, while there is no one-size-fits-all solution to eliminate overfishing, success can come from employing proven principles and practices while fine-tuning them to suit the specific circumstances and characteristics of individual locations around the world.
"The key is to use and share these practices more broadly," says Matthew Elliott, principal of CEA and author of "Charting a Course to Sustainable Fisheries. "In many areas of the world, particularly in the tropics and sub-tropics, we see fisheries expanding quickly with little in the way of management. This research fills an important information gap for those fisheries. We hope it will draw more international attention to fisheries management in the many parts of the world that we have historically ignored."
"This isn't something where we need another twenty years of science," says Gaines. "We know what it takes."
"Healthy ocean fisheries hold the potential to feed a growing population without destroying the supporting ecosystems to the point where they no longer produce seafood," adds Elliott. "Within our lifetime, we can make sustainable global fisheries the norm rather than the exception."

DAYTON, Ohio (Reuters) - Facing a tough path to victory if they cannot win Ohio, Republicans Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan launched a two-day bus tour on Tuesday to try to boost their fortunes in a state that polls show could be slipping away from them.
The Republican nominees for president and vice president appeared together for the first time in more than three weeks, part of what aides vow will be a more aggressive phase of campaigning after Romney spent much of the past two weeks raising money and holding few public rallies.
Romney emphasized his claims that Democratic President Barack Obama's policies are preventing the U.S. economy from a full recovery and that Obama has not been tough enough in pushing back against Chinese trade practices that have led to cheap goods flooding the U.S. market and killing American jobs.
Romney accused China of a wide variety of trade abuses, from holding down the value of its currency to keep its products cheap, to stealing U.S. intellectual property.
"We cannot compete with people that don't play fair, and I will not let that go on," Romney said.
SCRAMBLING IN OHIO
Romney's message on China has been a central part of his stump speech all year. Obama's campaign has responded with a television ad that accuses Romney of outsourcing jobs to China during his time as a private equity executive at Bain Capital.
Romney and his team hope the trade message will resonate in Ohio, a politically divided state that is key to his chances of winning the presidency - but where polls indicate Obama has opened up a lead.
Ohio's unemployment rate in July was 7.2 percent, better than the national level of 8.1 percent.
It is difficult to see how Romney could win the November 6 election without Ohio.
He has a narrower path than Obama to get the 270 electoral votes needed for victory, and most scenarios require him to win the Midwestern state where thousands of jobs were saved by the Obama-backed government bailout of the auto industry.
Romney aides dismissed surveys showing the Republican presidential ticket falling behind Obama in Ohio on a day in which a Washington Post poll showed the president with an 8-point lead over Romney, 52 to 44 percent.
Romney political director Rich Beeson told reporters on the candidate's plane that the campaign's internal polling showed a closer race in Ohio, within the survey's margin of error. He accused the Obama campaign of "spiking the ball at the 30-yard line," or declaring victory in the state long before the election.
"I kind of hope the Obama campaign is basing their campaign on what the public polls say," Beeson said. "We don't. We have confidence in our data and our metrics."
'MORE AGGRESSIVE, ASSERTIVE'
Romney has suffered a series of stumbles in recent weeks that have knocked him off message and given the advantage to Obama.
Some Romney supporters hope their candidate will put that behind him with an aggressive campaign schedule in the 10 or so key states that will decide the outcome of the election.
"I would like him to be more aggressive, assertive in detailing his plans, making people vote for a future and not against an alternative future. I want him to focus more on what he's going to do," said Ken Warner, 50, a software engineer from South Dayton, Ohio.
Romney sought to generate some fresh energy by appearing with Ryan, a Wisconsin congressman and budget hawk who is popular among conservatives - many of whom have been disappointed that Ryan has not been a more prominent force in Romney's campaign.
In introducing Romney, Ryan pointed to Romney's experience in the business world and said Obama is trying to distract Americans' attention from the economy.
"This president cannot run on his record. This president is going to say anything and everything to try and blame, to try and duck, to try and distort, to try and divide, to try and distract," Ryan said. "You know what, Ohio? We're not going to let him."
Joining Romney and Ryan on stage were two Republican senators, Rob Portman of Ohio and Rand Paul of Kentucky. Paul is the son of Ron Paul, a Texas congressman who ran against Romney for the Republican presidential nomination and has declined to endorse Romney.
Portman was on Romney's short list to be the vice presidential running mate. Now he is playing the role of Obama in mock debate sessions that Romney has been conducting to prepare for three presidential debates that may prove decisive in the election. The first one is on October 3 in Denver.
Romney quipped that Portman is playing the role of Obama well.

We?re really struggling to save money on a monthly basis
MONTREAL, Que. ? A majority of Canadians surveyed by the Bank of Montreal say they shop to cheer themselves up and mood-lifting impulse purchases cost Canadians $3,720 annually.
The Bank of Montreal poll found that 59% of those surveyed did impulse shopping and bought items like clothes and shoes and also treated themselves to eating out.
?We?re really struggling to save money on a monthly basis,? said Janet Peddigrew, district vice-president of midwestern Ontario at BMO.
Consumers have been spending more than they?ve been saving over the last 10 years, which is cause for concern, Peddigrew said.
?Those who answered the survey, the majority, said they would do it to cheer themselves up,? she said.
The survey found that 60% of Canadians did this kind of emotional shopping and 55% bought something they might not need because it was on sale.
On average, that amounts to $310 a month being spent on items that are wanted but not needed, according to the survey released on Tuesday.
Those surveyed believed they could save two-thirds of that amount if they made an effort to limit impulse spending, the bank said.
Peddigrew said setting a budget and using online tools to track spending can help keep impulse spending in check.
Peddigrew said not having enough savings can leave consumers caught short when an emergency arises, when they need to do a major home repair or when they lose their job.
The poll results come as Canadian debt-to-income ratios sit at a record 152% and top officials issue warnings to start paying down debt before interest rates rise.
There?s also an element of regret that comes with impulse shopping and in some cases, financial difficulties.
The survey found that more than half of respondents regretted their purchases and 43% sometimes spent more than they earned in a month. Another third of those surveyed had to borrow money or take out a loan to cover their impulse spending.
The consequences of impulse spending were more common among Canadians under 30 with one in three unable to afford something they needed because of spending on ?wants,? the survey said.
Men said they spent more than women on average, $414 versus $207 dollars but men tended to spend more on technology items, Peddigrew said.
BMO said its psychology of spending report is the first in a series that will examine personal finance and investing behaviours among Canadians.
The online survey was conducted by Pollara and interviewed 1,000 adults between Aug. 31 and Sept. 5. The survey has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1%, 19 times out of 20.

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? When you rear-end the car in front of you at a stoplight, you may feel a mix of different emotions such as anger, anxiety, and guilt. The person whose car you rear-ended may feel angered and frustrated by your carelessness, but it's unlikely that he'll feel much guilt.
The ability to identify and distinguish between negative emotions helps us address the problem that led to those emotions in the first place. But while some people can tell the difference between feeling angry and guilty, others may not be able to separate the two. Distinguishing between anger and frustration is even harder.
In a study forthcoming in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, psychological scientist Emre Demiralp of the University of Michigan and his colleagues hypothesized that clinically depressed people would be less able to discriminate between different types of negative emotions compared to healthy individuals. Clinically depressed people often experience feelings of sadness, anger, fear, or frustration that interfere with everyday life.
"It is difficult to improve your life without knowing whether you are sad or angry about some aspect of it," says Demiralp. "For example, imagine not having a gauge independently indicating the gasoline level of your car. It would be challenging to know when to stop for gas. We wanted to investigate whether people with clinical depression had emotional gauges that were informative and whether they experienced emotions with the same level of specificity and differentiation as healthy people."
The researchers recruited 106 people between the ages of 18 and 40 to participate in their study. Half of the participants were diagnosed with clinical depression and half were not. Over the course of seven to eight days, they carried a Palm Pilot, which prompted them to record emotions at 56 random times during the day. To report their emotions, they marked the degree to which they felt seven negative emotions (sad, anxious, angry, frustrated, ashamed, disgusted, and guilty) and four positive emotions (happy, excited, alert, and active) on a scale from one to four.
Demiralp and his colleagues looked at participants' tendency to give multiple emotions (e.g., disgusted and frustrated) similar rankings at a given point in time. According to their methodology, the more two emotions were reported together the less the person differentiated between these emotions.
The researchers found that clinically depressed people had less differentiated negative emotions than those who were healthy, supporting their hypothesis. Notably, they did not find the same difference between groups for positive emotions -- people with and without diagnosed clinical depression were equally able to differentiate between positive emotions. It is possible that people who are clinically depressed differentiate more between positive emotions as a coping mechanism.
Demiralp and his colleagues argue that the procedure used in the study to record emotions may be particularly useful in studying the emotional experience of clinically depressed people, paving the way for more treatment and therapy options in the future.
"Our results suggest that being specific about your negative emotions might be good for you," says Demiralp. "It might be best to avoid thinking that you are feeling generally bad or unpleasant. Be specific. Is it anger, shame, guilt or some other emotion? This can help you circumvent it and improve your life. It is one of our overarching goals to investigate approaches for facilitating this kind of emotional intelligence at a large scale in the population."

Jim Thomson is principal oceanographer at the Applied Physics Lab at the University of Washington. He studies ocean surface waves and coastal processes.
Thursday, Sept. 6
Ansel Adams always said that chance favors the prepared, but these days I wonder how far ahead he looked before taking his photos. Four years ago, my lab at the University of Washington started building a new buoy to measure the turbulence in breaking ocean waves. Now the chance to use it is fast approaching. Preparation is foremost on my mind.
Later this fall, we will embark on a research vessel toward an otherwise random spot in the north Pacific Ocean called Station P, more than 1,000 miles offshore. This station has a long history, with regular water samples from there going back 60 years. We?ll be looking for storms and big waves. If the data we have from the past couple years are any indication, we should see waves more than 10 meters (33 feet) high. The new buoys have been tested only in waves up to three meters high. That?s on my mind too.
It?s not like we?ve been avoiding the bigger waves; in fact, we?ve spent two years looking for them. The new instruments, which we call Swift buoys (for Surface Wave Instrument Floats with Tracking), have logged more than 1,300 hours of water time.
We have broken, battered and crushed all manner of things while trying to get these buoys into the roughest conditions possible. We have even capsized a small boat in the process. Indeed, the boat is part of the problem: To operate in big waves, we need a big boat. We need a global-class research vessel, of which there are only a handful in the United States and which cost $30,000 a day. This fall is our chance to use one of these vessels.
We know the waves in November will be big, because we have been measuring them for the past two years at Station P (usually referred to as Papa, according to the phonetic alphabet) with another type of buoy, called a WaveRider. The WaveRider is a recent addition to the station, one that is part of a larger effort to use the station for climate research. The station is 4,200 meters deep ?about 2.6 miles, a vertical distance equivalent to the average morning jog around the neighborhood ? making moorings, and everything else, difficult. The WaveRider mooring needs to be replaced, and that is the other goal of the trip. Another thing to prepare for.
Preparing involves a lot of incremental tasks. Yesterday was mundane: Joe was spooling mooring line at the warehouse, Alex was assembling a camera system to record waves from the bow of the ship, Mike was processing test data, and I was obsessively checking the satellite feed from the WaveRider (the battery is dying and thus always on my mind). Spare parts, fasteners and batteries were constantly arriving and being sorted according to a giant packing list. The lab was humming along at a reasonable, steady pace, and we were on schedule to go to sea in seven weeks.
Today, however, was not mundane. This morning, the ship coordinator called to say that the ship?s propulsion system had failed (chance?) and the necessary repairs would take the rest of 2012.
I braced for the worst ? we?re being canceled?
?Not yet,? was the reply from the fleet coordinator. Then: ?Let me see what the rest of the fleet has lined up.?
A few hours later, a salvage proposal came back. We could take a smaller vessel, departing three weeks from today, not seven. I said we would take it.
That reasonable, steady pace just left the building. To depart in three weeks means we send a shipping container with our equipment in one week.
Tomorrow, preparing will rapidly turn to packing. By Sept. 26, we will be ready. Then chance will drive the storms, and we will be driving ourselves ? to do more, to sleep less, to stay sharp amid the dark seas, and to make the most of our chance.
