Tax exemption planned for agriculture sector of Costa Rica

The Executive branch organized a special session 18,070 project, which will absolve 80% of taxes on land for agriculture and livestock.

The members of the agricultural sector celebrated, but will not be satisfied until the project becomes law, said Guido Vargas, National UPA.

Sabor?o, the Agricultural Affairs Committee of the Legislative Assembly, said the list of projects will be established today in the meeting. Next Monday the discussion will start.

To move the project to the top of the agenda, the deputies approved a motion to change the order of the agenda.

However, Sabor?o explained that this is merely a symbolic act, since it only applies to regular sessions.

We will have to pass a new motion on Monday.

Karen Porras, Executive Director of the Union of Local Government, highlighted the negative impact it would have on municipal finances.

She added that the municipalities have agreed to grant special treatment to farmers and ranchers. Her approach is to grant an exemption of 50%.

Porras said towns like Osa, that have no businesses and derrives their revenues primarily from property taxes, will be harmed.

The aim of the bill called, ?Preservation Land Use,? is to lower taxes for businesses involved in agriculture and raising livestock.
