Laborers to provide health insurance to strikers | Diversified Media ...

Thanks to their union brothers and sisters and their own union members of Laborers Local 563 will keep getting health insurance benefits while they?re on the strike picket lines. The workers have been on strike at Cretex in Shakopee, Minnesota since June 19th defending their retirement benefits. Thanks to Laborers Local 563?s strike fund and generous support from other unions these striking workers will have their COBRA health benefits reinstated. Tim Mackey, business agent for Local 563, says this is solidarity at its finest. Cretx let the workers health care benefits expire June 30th. The striking workers have been working without a contract since December 31, 2012. The union says Cretex is pushing to eliminate pension contributions and cut worker retirement packages by roughly 80 percent. Hourly compensation would also drop ? an equivalent pay cut of 12-17 percent. The Laborers International Union of North America says it has the resources and support to win this strike. The workers produce concrete construction materials, which are in high demand these days.
