Residents anxious to return to Colo. fire zone

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) ? Residents are anxious to return to the scene of Colorado's most destructive wildfire but authorities say it's still not safe.

Fire crews were putting out hot spots Sunday to prevent flare ups in heavily wooded Black Forest, where nearly 500 houses have been destroyed.

However, El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa said roads and power lines still need to be repaired. The death of two people trying to flee is still being investigated and he's in no hurry to let people back near what is considered a crime scene for now.

The 22-square-mile fire is 65 percent contained.

Kuwait court orders dissolution of parliament, new elections

By Sylvia Westall and Mahmoud Harby

KUWAIT (Reuters) - Kuwait's top court ordered the dissolution of parliament on Sunday and called for fresh elections, a ruling likely to herald fresh political volatility in the U.S.-allied Gulf Arab state.

The Constitutional Court made its ruling after throwing out opposition challenges to changes to the electoral system decreed by the emir, hereditary ruler of the oil-exporting country, head judge Youssef al-Mutawa told reporters.

Political stability in Kuwait, owner of more than six percent of global oil reserves, has traditionally depended on cooperation between the government and parliament, the oldest and most powerful legislature in the Gulf Arab states.

The development is a blow to opposition politicians who boycotted a parliamentary election in December in protest at the electoral rules. The election was the fifth since 2006 and political upheaval has held up economic development and reforms.

"This verdict today is the worst decision," former opposition MP Waleed Tabtabie wrote on Twitter.

The new voting rules, decreed six weeks before the poll, triggered mass protests. Police packed the court complex on Sunday after opposition figures said they would demonstrate if the emir's decree was upheld.

The opposition case challenged the constitutionality of the move by the emir, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmed al-Sabah, to reduce the number of votes allowed per citizen in parliamentary elections to one from four.

Political parties are banned in Kuwait so candidates campaign on an independent basis. Under the old system, voters could place four votes of equal weight for a candidate in their constituency. In December elections they could pick only one.

Protesters said the new rules aimed to weaken the opposition, which was able to form effective parliamentary alliances under the old four-vote system in the absence of parties. The government said the new voting system brought Kuwait in line with other countries.

The court ruling may divide the opposition, most of whose politicians have said they would not contest elections under the one-vote rule, though some may decide to re-enter the political system now the change has been approved by the top court.

PROTESTS

Kuwait, which sits in a strategic position between Saudi Arabia and Iraq and across the Gulf from Iran, has the most democratic political system in the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council. Its parliament has legislative powers and can hold government ministers to account.

However the emir has the final say in state matters and chooses the prime minister who in turn picks a cabinet, with members of the ruling Al-Sabah family occupying the top posts.

"The court's decision today enhances the durability of the democratic system," Information Minister Sheikh Salman al-Humoud al-Sabah said in a statement.

Last year's disturbances were unusual in their size and because those involved directly questioned the emir's policies. He is described as immune and inviolable in the constitution and dozens of Kuwaitis have been charged with insulting him, mainly on social media.

He is due to address the nation on state television later on Sunday. According to the court ruling, the emir must dissolve parliament and call elections. That could happen after the holy month of Ramadan which starts early next month.

Opposition politicians, who boycotted December's poll in protest at the decree, said changes to the voting system should be agreed by parliament.

The opposition boycott of the election meant that liberals, Shi'ites, non-aligned MPs and newcomers to parliamentary politics were elected to the assembly, working relatively well with the cabinet.

The more cooperative political environment has helped fuel a more than 30 percent rise of the stock exchange since the beginning of the year.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Chemists at Indiana University Bloomington have created a symmetrical, five-sided macrocycle that is easy to synthesize and has characteristics that may help expand the molecular tool box available to researchers in biology, chemistry and materials sciences.

The molecule, which the researchers call cyanostar, was developed in the lab of Amar Flood, associate professor in the Department of Chemistry in the College of Arts and Sciences. It is described in an article in the journal Nature Chemistry, scheduled for publication in August and available online.

Doctoral student Semin Lee is the lead author of the article, "A pentagonal cyanostar macrocycle with cyanostilbene CH donors binds anions and forms dialkylphosphate (3)rotaxanes." Flood and Chun-Hsing Chen, research crystallographer in the IU Molecular Structure Center, are co-authors.

"Macrocycles have been at the heart of molecular recognition experiments in recent years," Flood said. "But they're a dime a dozen. To make a contribution, you have to raise the bar."

Cyanostar raises the bar not only because it is easy to make, but for its unprecedented ability to bind with large, negatively charged ions, suggesting potential applications ranging from environmental remediation of perchlorate and molecular sensing of biological phosphates, to processes related to the life cycle of lithium ion batteries.

The creation follows from earlier work in Flood's lab showing that organic molecules could be designed to remove negatively charged ions from solutions. While the molecules have a neutral charge overall, their structure causes them to exhibit electro-positive properties and bind with weakly coordinating anions that were once thought to be incapable of being captured by molecular receptors.

Flood challenges graduate students to generalize the previous discovery of strong CH hydrogen bonds by creating molecules with similar yet complementary properties. In response, Semin Lee proposed using the cyanostilbene molecule as a building block for a new macrocycle -- a cyclic macromolecule with the capacity to bind ions. After false starts, he designed cyanostar, with a structure that resembles a five-pointed star.

A cross-section of the crystalline structure of cyanostar resembles the five-sided figures that Albrecht Durer showed in 1525 could be "packed" to tile a two-dimensional surface with periodic patterns. The form of the molecule and its fivefold symmetry are suggestive of Penrose tiles, geometrical forms that mathematicians have investigated in recent decades, and of quasicrystals, ordered arrays of atoms and molecules whose discovery in the 1980s changed the field of materials chemistry.

While chemists have created countless macrocycles, cyanostar is unusual in that it can be synthesized in a "one pot" process, without multiple, time-consuming steps. It is also atypical in that the synthesis produces high yields of over 80 percent, even as the quantity being produced increases to about 10 grams.

"That's quite unique," Flood said. "Normally, when you increase the amount of material you add to the reaction, the yield just drops off."

Shaped like shallow bowls, the molecules have a strong affinity for binding with large anions such as certain borate, chlorate and phosphate ions. The molecules bind in 2-to-1 sandwich-shaped complexes, with the anion sandwiched between two saucer-like cyanostars.

In addition to demonstrating its binding ability, the chemists showed cyanostar can be assembled into a dialkylphosphate rotaxane, a wheel-on-axle assembly in which a pair of macrocycles is threaded with a molecular rod, which is then capped on both ends by a "stopper." Rotaxanes are precursors of molecular machines and motors. Some can be manipulated -- for example, by applying light or heat -- to serve as chemical switches or to accomplish other types of work at the molecular level.

Teaching complete evolutionary stories increases learning

June 15, 2013 ? Many students have difficulty understanding and explaining how evolution operates. In search of better ways to teach the subject, researchers at Michigan State University developed complete evolutionary case studies spanning the gamut from the molecular changes underlying an evolving characteristic to their genetic consequences and effects in populations. The researchers, Peter J. T. White, Merle K. Heidemann, and James J. Smith, then incorporated two of the scenarios into a cellular and molecular biology course taught to undergraduates at the university's Lyman Briggs College.

When the students' understanding was tested, the results showed that students who had understood an integrated evolutionary scenario were better at explaining and describing how evolution works in general.

The results of the research, described in the July issue of BioScience, are significant because evolution is not usually taught in this comprehensive, soup-to-nuts way. Rather, instructors teach examples of parts of the evolutionary process, such as the ecological effects of natural selection or the rules of genetic inheritance, separately. It appears that this fragmentation makes it harder for students to understand the process as a whole.

White and his colleagues note that "surprisingly few" comprehensive evolutionary study systems have been described, although the number is growing. The two employed in the BioScience study were about the evolution of sweet taste and wrinkled skin in domestic garden peas, and the evolution of light or dark coat color in beach mice living on light or dark sand. Students were tested on the beach mouse coat color scenario as well as on evolutionary principles in general. Understanding the beach mouse example was a better predictor of good responses to questions about evolution in general than was performance on the course as a whole. This suggests that improvements in evolutionary understanding came mostly from studying the integrated evolution scenarios.

Navigating the NYC real estate market | PIX 11 - WPIX.com

You have saved your pennies. You have rented for years. You are now ready to take the leap. But are you ready to navigate the current New York City real estate market? Experts say it is heating up. And it?s not just the million dollar condo market in Manhattan.

?I?ve been saving money since I was 19-years-old. It was always in my financial plan to buy something,? said Brooklyn resident Ryann Imperioli. She and her husband Chris had a tight budget of $500,000 and they wanted to buy in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn. But after their first attempt to bid on an apartment didn?t go well, they realized something.

?We didn?t put a bid in right away and it was gone in a matter of days,? said Chris Imperioli

They had to act quickly. ?It took them a day to bid on the next apartment they loved. And they bid over the asking price. After a bidding war with two other prospective buyers, Ryann and Chris Imperioli?s offer was accepted on a two bedroom, one bathroom apartment in Prospect Park South. They got it for $415,000. It was within their budget, but in a different neighborhood than they originally planned.

Halstead broker Kris Sylvester helped them navigate the hot real estate market. He says their experience is becoming more and more common.

?We are experiencing a lot of bidding wars in all categories,? said Sylvester.

The Brooklyn broker just listed a three bedroom apartment with a renovated kitchen in Prospect Heights for $650,000. His advice to anyone interested in that property or any other apartment or house currently on the market: come prepared.

That means having a pre-approval for a mortgage, a real estate lawyer lined up and the mindset to bid at or above the asking price.

Sylvester has an open house coming up Sunday. ?I expect a very big turn-out. I am getting a lot of requests to show,? he said.

Amela Kadric, a Halstead broker in Riverdale, has had a similar experience in the North Bronx this spring.

?I advise my clients when they start looking, is that the first thing that they do is get pre-approved by a bank,? said Kadric. ?This way they know exactly what they are qualified for.?

Kadric listed a three bedroom walk-up apartment in Riverdale just over a month ago. There have been multiple offers.

?The first offer came in the first week,? she said.

And brokers have said for some deals, even ones in a lower price range, cash is king. More and more buyers want an all cash deal.

But according to Kris Sylvester a personal touch can still help win a property. ?One thing a lot of people do, and sometimes still works, is write a letter to the seller and try to connect with them in some way.?

Harry Connick Jr. writes song for Newtown victim

NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) ? Harry Connick Jr. has written a song in honor of a 6-year-old girl killed in the Newtown, Conn., school shooting.

Connick this week released the song "Love Wins," dedicated to Ana Grace Marquez-Greene. He says proceeds will go to the Ana Grace Fund set up to help the girl's family.

Connick played with the girl's jazz saxophonist father, Jimmy Greene, and sang at the funeral for Ana, one of 20 first-graders and six adults killed in December at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Greene is scheduled to receive the Governor's Arts Award at a ceremony Saturday at the International Festival for Arts and Ideas in New Haven.

Greene, an assistant professor at Western Connecticut State University, has released a series of critically acclaimed albums and received numerous honors.

Bulgaria media mogul elected security chief

SOFIA, Bulgaria (AP) ? The Bulgarian parliament's quick appointment of a legislator and media mogul to head the country's security service sparked massive protests Friday and prompted the president to demand the decision be immediately reversed.

Delyan Peevski, 33, was endorsed by legislators from the ruling left-leaning bloc in a 116-87 vote with one abstention. Peevski was the only one nominated for the post and the vote was not preceded by the usual debate.

President Rosen Plevneliev urged parliament to "immediately" retract its decision, saying it would have "long-term negative consequences for Bulgaria." He also called a meeting of the national security council next week to discuss Peevski's appointment.

Peevski and his mother, Irena Krasteva, control a network of national newspapers and television channels. Those who oppose his appointment believe his roles as spy chief and a media mogul would collide.

Several thousand people, organized through social media, rallied in front of government headquarters Friday to demand that the decision be revoked, shouting "Mafia!" and "Resignation!" The protesters accused the government of having ties with the oligarchy and demanded that early elections be called immediately.

"The election of Delyan Peevski at the helm of the state security agency is an arrogant sign that the mafia has taken over the state," the conservative DSB party said in a statement.

In 2007, Peevski was fired as a deputy minister of emergency situations in a corruption scandal. He was eventually cleared after an investigation established no wrongdoing, however, and was reinstated in the post.

The current government, backed by the Socialists and a smaller ethnic Turkish party, was formed after the May 12 election. Together the two groups have 120 seats in the 240-member parliament, which makes it difficult for them to push through reforms of the country's ailing economy.

Turkey's Erdogan to meet protesters' representatives to defuse row

By Nick Tattersall and Jonathon Burch

ISTANBUL/ANKARA (Reuters) - Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan will meet on Thursday with members of a group opposed to the redevelopment of an Istanbul park in a bid to end two weeks of anti-government protests, just hours after Erdogan said his patience had run out.

Earlier in the day, Erdogan gave a final warning for those occupying the central Istanbul Gezi Park to leave and struck back at criticism from the European Parliament over the ferocity of a police crackdown on the protesters.

"Our patience is at an end. I am making my warning for the last time. I say to the mothers and fathers please take your children in hand and bring them out ... Gezi Park does not belong to occupying forces but to the people," he said.

A heavy-handed police crackdown on the park nearly two weeks ago triggered an unprecedented wave of protest against Erdogan and his AK Party - an association of centrists and conservative religious elements - drawing in secularists, nationalists, professionals, unionists and students.

Erdogan has already discussed the plans to build over the park with various people who support the protesters, but until Thursday had refused to meet with the Taksim Solidarity group at the heart of the campaign to protect the park.

"Upon the prime minister's invitation, members of the Taksim Solidarity will discuss with him our view that Gezi Park should remain a park," Eyup Muhcu, head of the Chamber of Architects, told Reuters.

Musicians and actors were also in the delegation to meet Erdogan in Ankara around 11 pm, media reports said.

Erdogan, who has accused foreign forces, international media and market speculators of stoking the unrest and trying to undermine the Turkish economy, said he would "share with the nation" at another AKP meeting on Friday details of what he termed a "game being played with Turkey".

"It is as if the whole of Turkey is on fire, as if the whole of Turkey is collapsing," he said of some media coverage, describing it as "deceptive and unethical".

Riot police looked on from the fringes of Taksim Square, the epicenter of the protests, overnight as crowds mingled, some chanting and dancing, others applauding a concert pianist who took up residence with a grand piano on the square.

It was a contrast to the scene 24 hours earlier, when teargas sent thousands scurrying into side streets before authorities bulldozed barricades and reopened the square to traffic for the first time since the troubles began.

Police fired teargas and water cannon day after day in cities including Ankara last week while youths threw stones and petrol bombs. Three people, one a policeman, died and about 5,000 thousand people were injured, according to the Turkish Medical Association.

REFERENDUM

Erdogan met a group of academics, artists and students who support the Gezi Park protests on Wednesday and AK Party deputy chairman Huseyin Celik said they had discussed the possibility of a referendum on the plans to build on the park.

The offer is one of the only concessions the authorities have publicly floated after days of firm rhetoric from Erdogan refusing to back down. Celik gave few details of how a referendum would be carried out, saying it could either be held across Istanbul, or just in the district near Taksim.

The protesters in the park, camped out in a ramshackle settlement of tents, were skeptical.

"The people the prime minister spoke to he chose. He said they will be the ones representing us. But they don't represent us. They have nothing to do with what we think," said Aylin Kaplan, 24, a student who has been in the park from the start.

"From the beginning we have said we have specific requests, we have been clear and open. We do not need a referendum," she said, repeating the main demand that the government abandon plans to build a replica Ottoman-era barracks on the park.

President Abdullah Gul, who has struck a more conciliatory tone than Erdogan, said he had also privately met with some protesters. He has said the government should engage its critics, but appeared to close ranks with the prime minister on Wednesday, saying violent protests were a different matter.

"Yesterday's meeting was important. I have also met with those who are protesting ... I have had meetings without telling the press," he said. "It is very important to listen first. A middle way has to be found."

EUROPEAN WARNING

Erdogan's tough talk has endeared him to voters for the past decade, but his opponents say he has now poured fuel on the flames. On Tuesday he said he would not kneel before the protesters and that "this Tayyip Erdogan won't change".

The United States, which has held up Erdogan's Turkey in the past as an example of Muslim democracy that could benefit other countries in the Middle East, expressed concern about events and urged dialogue between government and protesters.

The European Parliament on Thursday warned the government against the use of "harsh measures" against peaceful protestors and urged Erdogan to take a "unifying and conciliatory" stance.

In a resolution adopted in Strasbourg, the European Parliament expressed its deep concern "at the disproportionate and excessive use of force by Turkish police to break up peaceful and legitimate protests in Istanbul's Gezi Park."

The lawmakers also said they believed that the wave of protests reflected the growing discontent that minority voices lack representation.

Erdogan argues that the broader mass of people have been manipulated by extremists and terrorists and says his political authority derives from his popular mandate in three successive election victories.

Turkey has been locked in protracted negotiations over EU membership since 2005 and Erdogan slammed the resolution.

"How can you take this kind of a decision about Turkey which isn't even an EU member but a candidate," he said.

"You should know your place."

Tiger Woods & Rich Schefren Know This Victory Secret. Do You ...

What do Tiger Woods, Roger Federer, Kobe Bryant, Drew Brees and David Beckham have in common?

They are the world?s highest paid athletes according to Forbes Magazine, with Tiger Woods topping the list at $78.1 Million in winnings and endorsement deals according to calculations made in June 2013.

Tiger is not only the highest paid, but he is the youngest golfer to win 50 tournaments on tour.

Ranked the number one golfer in the world, he has an impressive list of achievements including being awarded the PGA Player of the Year a record ten times.? Plus he has more career major wins than any other active golfer.? He?s also the youngest player to achieve the career Grand Slam (winning all the golf?s major championships in the same calendar year.)

Whether it?s in sports, the arts, or business, what leads people to greatness? What makes them the best in the world?

Being a successful volleyball athlete myself and now working closely with top entrepreneurs such as Rich Schefren, Ryan Deiss, and Yanik Silver, I?ve discovered a common ingredient?not only in athletes, but in entrepreneurs.

I?m not talking about drive and ambition, although that is important to succeed and will lead to a certain level of success, it is not what leads to the highest level of achievement.

Writing down your goals and having a plan is another element often referenced for high accomplishment. While I highly recommend having your end-game defined and a plan written down to achieve it, it too is not the missing, secret ingredient that gets you to the top.

Passion for what they do? Again, that will definitely help you out and keep you driving forward during times when you are struggling, but is not the one missing ingredient.

So what is it?

They seek out and work with the best coaches in the world.

Every one of the highest paid athletes on the Forbes list works with the best and (not surprisingly) highest paid coaches.

Rich Schefren, Yanik Silver, Ryan Deiss, Frank Kern?all turned to the best coach they could find.

But you might ask yourself, if you are at the top of your game, why you would need a coach?

I mean Tiger Woods is the number one golfer in the world earning serious money, why on earth would he work with a coach?

Or why would the most successful entrepreneurs already at the top of the ladder need coaching?

Because it accelerates success and keeps them at the top of their game.

A great coach will guide you in what you need to do to win.

A great coach will be knowledgeable of the most effective techniques, methods and strategies required for success.

A great coach will get to know what pushes your buttons so she or he can motivate you and keep you on course when you start to stray in the wrong direction.

A great coach will introduce you to the greatest leaders?whether it?s through mastermind groups or simply telling you what you should read or in the case of an athlete putting you with a team or workout partners.? He puts these people in your path so that you can be surrounded by successful people that will help you expand your thinking and knowledge and push you even further.

So if you want to accelerate your success and reach (and stay at) the top of your game, crowd your path with successful people and the best coaching you can find.

NOTE: Yanik Silver, Rich Schefren, Frank Kern?names you?ve undoubtedly heard. They are some of the top Internet Marketing Gurus?and continue to be. What do they have in common? They all enlisted Dan Kennedy and knew he was THE top guy who could help them accelerate their success online.

For the first time ever, Dan Kennedy will reveal to you his insights about Online Marketing which have been responsible for more money being made selling things online than most of the names you associate with the Internet. Things which were previously only shared with a rare few premium private clients who invested serious cash to find out what he had to say.

Even more rare, is the fact that you will be getting this information FREE. I?m not big on that, in fact I sometimes charge people to have lunch with me, but this is critical information our GKIC members need right now. So you have the unique opportunity to join in and find out:

  • The constructive and productive ways to think about the Internet and online media?and how it can provide you with a legitimate portfolio of opportunities.
  • Key principles and ideas you need to understand to streamline your success. There is enormous amount of B.S. about online, I?ll help you sort this out, so you can focus on what truly works.
  • The marketing and selling principles valid with every media, including online media.

There is very limited space available for this LIVECAST event. If you want this unheard of FREE access to Dan Kennedy?s coaching, you?ll want to register at the link below, immediately.

P.P.S. If you?re still thinking about this and haven?t registered, let me ask you a question. If you decided you wanted to learn to play golf like Tiger, who would you go to for help? Tiger Woods?or his coach?

My guess is you?d go to his coach. Because if the person is a successful coach, it?s pretty much guaranteed they know how to convey what they know to others with clarity and precision.

If you want to earn money and gain the independence like Rich Schefren, Tim Ferris (author of the 4-hr work week) and others like them, then you?ll want to go to their coach?Dan Kennedy and find out what he has to say.? Register here now or go to www.dankennedy.com/internetsecrets

Explosion in Attack on Church in Kenya Injures 15

By: Morning Star News

Thursday, 13 June 2013, 21:37 (EST)

Explosion in Attack on Church in Kenya Injures 15 Street scene in Likoni, near Mombasa, Kenya.
(Wikipedia) Assailants on a motorbike threw an explosive device into a church compound in southeastern Kenya on Sunday (June 9), injuring 15 people.

Two pastors were among the wounded from the explosion at an evangelistic service of Earthquake Miracle Ministry Church in Mrima village, near the coastal town of Likoni, Mombasa District, said David Njoroge, pastor of the Worldwide Gospel Church. Both legs of Assistant Pastor Collins Maseno were broken in the blast and he was in critical condition, and Senior Pastor Dominic Osano sustained serious injuries to his hand and the back of his neck, Njoroge told Morning Star News.

?The Christians living around the scene of the incident are still in shock and are wondering as to the mission behind the attack, while several pastors looked demoralized,? Njoroge said. ?But others said prayers will help them stand strong in sharing the Christian faith.?

The blast occurred at 7 p.m., he said, adding that the weapon appeared to be a home-made fuel bomb, though area press quoted police as saying it was a hand grenade. A 10-year-old boy, Dominic Maseno, was reportedly among the injured.

Islamic extremists from Somalia?s rebel Al Shabaab group have been suspected in previous attacks in the coastal areas of Kenya, and today 45 pastors met with government officials to discuss security. The provincial police commissioner, the officer in charge of police, the district commissioner and a county commissioner attended.

The officials accepted the pastors? request that the government provide security during such Christian gatherings, Njoroge said. At the same time, the parties agreed that Christian meetings are to end before 6 p.m., he said, and the commissioner told the pastors that they are to keep watch for extremists and report suspected militia groups.

Mombasa police said they were searching for the assailants.

In Nairobi today, suspected Al Shabaab members reportedly tossed a grenade into a crowd in the Majengo area of the capital?s largely Somali-immigrant area of Eastleigh, injuring four.

Kenyan churches and other facilities have been the target of several bombings and shootings since Kenya sent troops into southern Somalia in October 2011 in response to kidnappings and other attacks by Al Shabaab rebels from Somalia. African Union Mission in Somalia forces have been battling the insurgents in Somalia, and northern and coastal areas of Kenya have become places of refuge for retreating rebels.

Many Al Shabaab rebels, said to have ties with Al Qaeda, have taken refuge in Garissa in northern Kenya. Chaplain Julius Mukonzi was killed and 11 others were injured on Nov. 4 when suspected Islamic extremists tossed an explosive device at a church in the Administrative Police compound in Garissa.

At the same time, a separatist group known as the Mombasa Republic Council has also been accused of mounting attacks in Kenya?s coastal regions, according to Agence France-Presse.

On Sept. 30, 2012, suspected Al Shabaab militants threw a grenade into an Anglican church in Nairobi that killed 9-year-old Ian John Maina. Several other children attending a Sunday school class were seriously injured in the attack on the Anglican Church of Kenya St. Polycarp in the Pagani area, next to Eastleigh.

Al Shabaab, which has been designated a terrorist organization by several Western governments, seeks to impose a strict version of sharia (Islamic law) on Somalia.

Kenya is nearly 83 percent Christian and 8.32 percent Muslim, according to Operation World.

E3: Nintendo showcases updated 'Super Smash,' 'Mario,' and 'Zelda'

At E3, Nintendo showed off Super Smash Bros,?Pikmin 3, Mario Kart 8, Donkey Kong Country Returns: Tropical Freeze, Super Mario 3D World, Bayonetta 2, and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.

Instead of a typical flashy presentation at the?Electronic?Entertainment?Expo, the Japanese gaming giant opted to showcase several games for its Wii U system during a brief Tuesday presentation at its booth on the show floor of the gaming industry's annual trade show.

"Today is different," Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime told those gathered inside the behemoth white structure. "It's the reason you're gathered here inside of our booth ? standing instead of sitting ? because it was our decision to minimize the time from when we said 'good morning' and you getting to play the game."

Nintendo showed off the cartoony strategy game "Pikmin 3," anti-gravity racer "Mario Kart 8," 2-D platformer "Donkey Kong Country Returns: Tropical Freeze," 3-D platformer "Super Mario 3D World," slick action sequel "Bayonetta 2" and a speedier rendition of "The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker" for the Wii U. For gamers who couldn't make it to E3, the titles will be on display at more than 100 Best Buy Co. stores in North America this week.

The company also flaunted ? but didn't allow attendees to play ? a new installment in the fighting series "Super Smash Bros." The new edition will feature such characters as Mario, Mega Man and the female yoga trainer from Wii Fit.

The company has struggled since November with the launch of the Wii U, which features an innovative tablet-like controller yet graphics on par with Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3. Nintendo Co. said it sold just 3.45 million units by the end of March, well below the company's expectations.

"We feel very good about this E3, and that's because consumers buy hardware to play games, and we're got a fantastic lineup of games that we're showcasing," Fils-Aime said after the event.

During showy Monday presentations, competitors Microsoft and Sony hyped their respective next-generation consoles. Microsoft Corp. touted new games for the Xbox One, which it said will cost $499, while Sony Corp. unveiled its boxy $399 console, the PlayStation 4. Both consoles feature richer graphics and deeper social networking capabilities.

"Our competition is going to do what best serves their needs," said Fils-Aime. "We're a different type of company, utilizing our first-party titles to drive our install base. We've done that very effectively for over 30 years. We're a video game company. We make great games. That's what we focus on."

PlayStation 4 console hardware finally revealed

PlayStation 4 console hardware finally revealed

Well, we know what the controller and the Eye look like, we've got all sorts of details about what's under the hood and we've even seen some games in action. What we haven't seen yet is the PlayStation 4 itself. Well, thankfully Sony didn't make us wait too long at this year's E3 before fleshing out those little sneak peaks with a full on reveal. Shocker: it's all black! Well, almost all black. There is a strip of purple dividing the mostly murdered-out tower. Like the Xbox One it's a pretty unassuming looking console. Gone are the dramatic swoops and curves of the PS3, and so are just about any obvious buttons. The two halves of the PS4 are slightly offset and angled to create a slightly agressive profile when viewed from the right angle, but mostly it seems designed not to draw attention to itself -- pretty much the exact opposite of the last generation of gaming platforms.

The one portion of the device with the Sony and PlayStation logos on it is that glossy "piano black" we're all familiar with. But, the rest of the device appears to be a matte black which makes the console look serious. And not business serious like a BlackBerry, hostile serious like a knife. As you can see, as with previous iterations, there is a stand for keeping the console upright, should you have more vertical than horizontal space. There's plenty of images in the galleries below. But, don't worry, we'll be back with plenty more once we get to see it in the flesh.

The Many Games Of The RPS Community | Rock, Paper, Shotgun

By Jim Rossignol on June 4th, 2013 at 12:00 pm.

There has never been a more suitable time for you to play games with RPS readers. And they?re up to all kinds of larks and japes in games such as diverse as Warframe and Star Trek Online. There are familiar popular collaborative pastimes such as Planetside 2, Mechwarrior Online, and Neverwinter, but also newer plans such as an RPS racing community, a Rising Storm group, and even plans for the unreleased Hardware.

Of course, if you are in the orbit of London you could always make the collaboration a real-world one, with the social club. I mean why not? Anyway, whatever your tastes, there are many others. Check out the General Sociability forum for more.
