The Obama Collective - It was an inaugural address that sounded a defense of the American government's contribution to social fabric and made the argument that the social fabric binds this country together.
It was a pre-emptive strike in the coming battle over those programs.
Obama - "?preserving our individual freedoms ultimately requires collective action?"
"The commitments we make to each other - through Medicare, and Medicaid, and Social Security - these things do not sap our initiative; they strengthen us. They do not make us a nation of takers; they free us to take the risks that make this country great."
"Progress does not compel us to settle centuries-long debates about the role of government for all time - but it does require us to act in our time?"
He made a strong pitch for a progressive government even as he encouraged a more reasoned discourse.
"We cannot mistake absolutism for principle, or substitute spectacle for politics, or treat name-calling as reasoned debate," he said.
Rick Klein: "This was no centrist conciliator. It was the speech of a committed, unapologetic progressive, an Obama doctrine for domestic policy that included concrete commitments in areas he made little progress on over his first four years. Above all, he was speaking to a changing America - the nation that propelled him to a second term, and whose voices he will need to channel to be effective over the next four years." http://abcn.ws/Tbd99y
Here is Devin Dwyer's Wrap of the Day - "The address, lasting a little less than 20 minutes, laid out in broad terms Obama's vision for the next four years, alluding to looming policy debates on the war in Afghanistan, deficit reduction, immigration, and overhaul of Social Security and Medicare.
"Obama also became the first president, at least in recent inaugural history, to make explicit mention of equality for gay and lesbian Americans. He made repeated mentions of "climate change," something no president has said from such a platform before." http://abcn.ws/13WWYP0
