Hiring Trend Update: ABS Adds More Military Veterans to Service Desk Team

ABS Veterans Leverage their Military Service Skills to Provide Outstanding Customer Support

Schaumburg, IL (PRWEB) July 31, 2012

As a 100% US based help desk outsourcing provider, ABS Associates, Inc. employs an all American staff from diverse backgrounds so it should be no surprise that many of its personnel are culled from the ranks of the United States Armed Forces. A company that prides itself in seeking service desk agents with Personality, Energy, and a Professional presence (PEP) returning service men and women have become a logical choice in ABS?s own recruiting efforts. With daily IT challenges such as high call volumes, client outages, and new application deployments, ABS relies on service desk agents to be fully prepared and ready to serve its clients. So it helps to have disciplined, organized, and results oriented veterans on its team as they have in many cases dealt with comparatively more stressful deployments in their earlier, and in some cases current, careers with Uncle Sam. A few of these proud veterans discussed how their military experience and training prepared them for a career at ABS.

Jeron, a Sergeant in the US Army with secret clearance who still serves one weekend a month as a Temporary Placement Unit (TPU) soldier, completed two tours in Iraq and one in Afghanistan before joining ABS as a Level 1 agent. Although most of his daily IT related tasks in the Army included supporting Active Directory, password resets, ticket troubleshooting, and network routing protocols, Jeron also located and disabled roughly 65 Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) while deployed in Afghanistan. ?Regardless of whether you?re IT, you?re still a soldier,? says Jeron with a smile. ?And that military bearing goes along with customer service. You may not always get a pleasant customer, but you have to remain cool and professional, place a ticket, troubleshoot, and provide results.?

Jeron had an option to build a mobilized unit in El Paso, Texas before he got the call to serve ABS?s clients. Raised in Chicago area suburbs not far from ABS headquarters, Jeron is glad to be back home with his daughter and the rest of his family.

Charles served honorably for 5 years in the Navy as Petty Officer 3rd class on board the USS Saipan, a Tarawa class amphibious assault ship that was the home of 1,000 sailors and 1,500 marines. As a Navy electrician, Charles was in charge of the basic electrical maintenance of the ship including subsystems such as the ballast tanks and stern gate that launched the Landing Craft Units (LCUs), bringing the marines and their equipment to shore. ?Being in the Navy prepared me for life in general,? says Charles. ?The Navy taught me to be punctual, to follow through on issues, and to speak to several different types of people with respect. There were people from different backgrounds, different religions, and different cultures all working as a team to keep the ship afloat.?

Charles is currently a Remote Level 2 Agent supporting various ABS clients and, in addition to enjoying the ?balance between technical knowledge and social interaction? at ABS, he relishes the responsibility of seeing Level 2 issues through to resolution.

Chris retired from the Navy after 20 years of service as a Petty Officer 1st class and sonar technician providing LAN administration as well as self described ?basically fix it? duties while serving aboard four different submarines (USS Aspro, Hawkbill, Cheyenne, and Bremerton) during the course of his career. Chris, who joined the Navy in July 1990, only a month before the Gulf War began, was aboard the first boat to launch missiles against Iraq during the shock and awe campaign. ?On a submarine we?re pretty much a tight knit family,? recalls Chris fondly. ?You have to rely on everyone around you to be able to save your life and you can?t just jump overboard like on a surface ship. You learn to adapt to and overcome any obstacle you encounter.?

Adds Chris, ?In the Navy, there?s no such thing as Tier 1, 2, or 3 so I learned how to take ownership of problems and then get them fixed and now I?m just applying that same philosophy at ABS.? An affable and outgoing Level 1 agent whom end users ask for specifically by name, Chris?s people skills were also recognized while he was in the Navy as he was awarded the role of Recreation Committee President and was a party planner and host for three different Christmas events. His fellow sailors still remember it to this day as the best party they ever had due to Chris?s diligence with the catering menu, choosing the right venue, and greeting all attendees personally throughout the night.

Zakkery was the youngest Army Sergeant in his battery and was a squad designated marksman during his four years of service, six months of which was in Iraq. ?My duties were to follow orders,? says the Kansas native wryly. ?We?d go through villages and perform the classic mission of winning the hearts and minds of the locals whether that entailed giving kids candy, playing soccer with them, or talking to the families and helping them with anything they need.? Zakkery went on to describe how once they even stopped to assist a group of civilians change the tires on their pickup truck.

But despite the humanitarian aspects of Zakkery?s service, the harsh realities of the conflict, much of which was among the Iraqi people themselves, would interrupt the more lighthearted moments. ?In a lot of these villages there were wounded or sick women and children,? Zakk continued. ?IEDs sometimes hit civilians. Religious militia would get into fire fights with each other.? Through it all, Zakkery picked up strong leadership skills such as learning to organize and prioritize his tasks and ?focus on there here and now? versus getting distracted by personal issues on the home front. Consistent with his fast tracked promotion in the Army, Zakkery hit the ground running at ABS and was handling Level 1 help desk issues via email and phone contacts sooner than most agents.

?Fortunately for ABS, military training combined with help desk support experience has prepared all of these veterans to serve our clients with the same standard of excellence that they served the USA,? says ABS CEO Rosemarie Mitchell. ?We?re proud to have them on our team."

The video titled, "Grand Entrance," guides viewers from entry through descent, and after landing.

Actors William Shatner and Wil Wheaton, two stars who made their mark in different installments of the hugely popular "Star Trek" television series, narrate two new NASA videos about the agency's Mars rover, Curiosity, which is scheduled to arrive at the Red Planet in less than a week.

After a roughly 8.5-month journey through space, Curiosity is scheduled to touch down on the Martian surface on Aug. 5 at 10:31 p.m. PDT (1:31 a.m. EDT Aug. 6; 0531 GMT).

Shatner, who played the legendary Captain Kirk in the original "Star Trek" TV series, provides the voice-over for one video, while Wheaton, who memorably portrayed the boy genius Crusher on "Star Trek: The Next Generation," narrates the other. Since their turns on the hit series, Shatner and Wheaton have become pop culture icons thanks to legions of fans around the world who affectionately nickname themselves "Trekkies."

The NASA videos, both titled "Grand Entrance," detail the stages of the Curiosity rover's entry, descent and landing on Mars. The two versions are almost identical, but with both actors adding their own characteristic flair. [Video: William Shatner Describes Mars Rover Landing]

"Shatner and Wheaton are mavericks in inspiring film, TV and social media audiences about space," Bert Ulrich, NASA's multimedia liaison for film and TV collaborations, said in a statement. "NASA is thrilled to have them explain a difficult landing sequence in accessible terms that can be understood by many. Thanks to their generous support, Mars exploration will reach Tweeters, Trekkies and beyond!"

In the videos, Shatner and Wheaton describe the intricate details of Curiosity's harrowing journey to the Martian surface.

When Curiosity reaches Mars, the 1-ton rover will be lowered to the surface by a rocket-powered sky crane. This contraption will help slow the spacecraft's speed from about 13,200 mph (about 21,250 kilometers per hour) to zero in only seven minutes. This thrilling entry, descent and landing process is nicknamed "the seven minutes of terror" because of its complexity.

Humpback whales linger in Antarctica

Humpback whales spend their summers in Antarctica chowing down on shrimplike krill. Now, scientists are finding that these marine behemoths are reluctant to leave the Antarctic as winter draws near.

A new study, published online July 30 in the journal Endangered Species Research, is one of the few to count whales in the Antarctic autumn rather than summer and to focus on near-shore waters rather than open ocean. The results reveal that Antarctica's bays are a more important food source than scientists had expected. The study also suggests that later winters and less ice due to climate change could affect the whales' migration habits.

"Establishing the autumn density of humpback whales in the inshore regions of the Western Antarctic Peninsula is crucial for understanding the role they play in this rapidly changing ecosystem," study researcher Ari Friedlaender, a scientist at the Duke University Marine Lab, said in a statement.

Friedlaender, study leader David Johnston of Duke University and their colleagues surveyed the bays and straits of the Western Antarctic Peninsula between April and June 2009 ? when summer is already drawing to a close at these high latitudes. They used visual surveys backed up by tagging studies to estimate the density of whales near the Antarctic shore. [ In Photos: Tracking Humpback Whales ]

Humpbacks (Megaptera novaeangliae) typically feed at high latitudes in the summer and then move toward the equator to breed in the winter. They were once hunted nearly to extinction, but have recovered in numbers since bans on commercial whaling have been enacted. The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists humpback whales as "least concern," though they are still protected under the U.S. Endangered Species Act.

It's not easy to get good counts of whales in the tight confines of bays and inlets, Johnston said in a statement.

"We had no idea that the whales were going to be packed up in these narrow channels and passages," he said. "We had to think on our feet a bit and use alternative sampling approaches and incorporate data from other portions of the project."

The result was a count of 371 groups of humpback whales over a 406-mile (654 kilometers) area of ocean. At their most crowded, the whales were seen at a density of 1.75 per square kilometer. (One square kilometer equals about 0.4 square miles.)

"That's higher than anyone expected," Johnston said.

That high density was seen in the relatively close quarters of Wilhelmina Bay, Antarctica. The lowest densities were seen in more open areas, the researchers reported.

The findings reveal that humpbacks spend more time than expected in Antarctica before beginning their long migrations north to the waters off of Central and South America, Australia, New Zealand and southern Africa to breed. Climate change could alter these patterns, the researchers wrote.

"The number of humpback whales we detected in these bays in the late autumn raises questions about the timing and frequency of migratory movements to breeding regions by individual whales," they wrote. "If the Gerlache Strait region remains largely ice-free in future winters, nonreproductive humpback whales could choose to remain close to large overwintering krill swarms and forego migration."

USF has been around only 15 years, so there are no major traditions in Tampa filled with rich history.

But that does not mean USF is completely devoid of meaningful signs.

In fact, there is one that is found just about everywhere you look in the football facility: "Stampede To Victory"

The brainchild of former coach Jim Leavitt, the signs are not-so-gentle reminders of what it takes for USF to win each and every week.

Coach Skip Holtz kept them all up when he took over for the 2010 season. You can find them posted in meeting rooms most strategically, where players get a daily glimpse of what they need to do to win.

Syrian soldiers 'fled like rats': rebels

"The soldiers fled like rats," says a grinning rebel after he and his fellow fighters captured Anadan checkpoint from the Syrian army, giving them strategic access to Aleppo where they are battling a fierce loyalist offensive.

"Bashar don't go, we will catch you," jokes another rebel, sitting on crates of ammunition in the back of a truck where the Islamist flag -- black with white lettering -- flutters.

The jubilant rebels celebrate their victory with gunfire, while some retrieve weapons and ammunition left behind by the retreating Syrian troops after 10 hours of fierce fighting during the night.

The ground near the military post is littered with bullets of all calibre, as well as heavy machineguns and Kalashnikovs, after the rebels captured it just before dawn on Monday.

The Anadan checkpoint, about five kilometres (3.8 miles) northwest of Aleppo, gives the rebels free movement between Turkey and the northern city, Syria's commercial capital.

The overrunning of the checkpoint comes just days after Syrian troops on Saturday launched an offensive to dislodge the rebel Free Syrian Army (FSA), composed of deserters and armed civilians, from Aleppo.

At Anadan, a rebel could be seen taking shells from an army tank and handing them over to a colleague to be loaded into a pick-up truck. Nearby lies a still-smouldering truck that had been used to ferry soldiers, its tyres melted.

More trucks are parked under a large tent, where the rebels empty dozens of boxes of ammunition and search through whatever has been left behind by the Syrian soldiers.

A rebel picks up a book, a biography of Hafez al-Assad, former president and father of Bashar al-Assad, and tears it into pieces.

The assault on the checkpoint came soon after the call at dusk on Sunday by the muezzin signalling the end of the day's Ramadan fasting. It was ordered by Lieutenant Rifaat Khalil.

"We had 150 rebels ready to fight, but we sent a first wave of 50 men," says the lieutenant.

The rebels arrived from all sides and opened fire with rockets, machineguns and Kalashnikovs.

"We have arrested 25 soldiers and recovered six bodies, but maybe they took away other bodies when they fled," adds the FSA officer.

Once the soldiers had fled, the rebels counted their own losses: four men killed.

During the battle they seized eight tanks, only one of which was dysfunctional.

"Now we can use them to fight in Aleppo," says Khalil.

"This victory strengthens the position of the rebels in Aleppo, and God willing, all the rebels are heading to Aleppo to free the city from Assad's gangs and the shabihas", he says, referring to the pro-regime militiamen.

Aleppo, the country's economic powerhouse, lies just behind a hill overlooking a dam near Anadan.

With the capture of the checkpoint, the rebels now control a major route between the Turkish border and north of Aleppo -- a vital axis for the shipment of weapons, fuel and food for opposition fighters locked in battle in Aleppo.

The rebels had tried in May to take the dam held by the Syrian army but their presence in Anadan, a few hundred metres (yards) from the dam, attracted massive bombing from the soldiers and forced locals to flee.

Today Anadan is a ghost town. Its streets are dotted with shell holes, walls are blackened by fire bombs, homes lie looted and deserted with their windows broken.

"People have left their doors open and gone," says General Abdel Nasser Firzat, commander of the rebel troops in Anadan. Firzat, who spent 10 years in Russia, defected in June to be part of the rebellion.

"My three children left Aleppo, a few hours later my wife did the same, and I left last. We ended up outside Aleppo. I took them to safety and then came here," says Firzat who has made a spacious house in the town his temporary residence.

Firzat says the regime still "controls the skies."

But, he asserts, Assad's army only controls three areas of the countryside surrounding Aleppo. He points to a military map showing an airfield from where helicopters take off, and an artillery post.

As he speaks a helicopter flies high above.

"Before the army bombed us day and night but now they are too occupied in Aleppo and only bomb us during the day," says Firzat.

Suddenly there is an explosion a few metres down the road and a cloud of dirt and dust rises. The rebels run in all directions as shells begin falling closer.

Two youngsters on a motorcycle rush to take refuge in the town. They bow their heads to protect themselves and ride as fast as possible after a shell falls about 50 metres from them.

The bombings continue throughout the afternoon in Anadan and surrounding villages.

Body: For a simple pest infestation, it's probably wise to do pest control and removal all by yourself. But when pests have multiplied and the infestation has grown serious, hiring a pest control company is certainly the smartest thing to do. In Islington, there are several N1 pest control companies specializing in pest eradication, from rodents to insects, to fleas and bed bugs.

State-of-the-art equipment and techniques ensure that pests are completely eradicated and will never invade your home again.

Often, chemical sprays that are sold in the market may be effective only on small infestations and may not last long. Aside from chemical sprays, service providers may also use mechanical methods, such as the use of traps and baits, as well as dust applicators, fumigators, fogging equipment and other state-of-the-art equipment you probably may not have seen or heard of, and that only these companies have access to.

Another advantage of hiring experts is the fact that these individuals are equipped with the ability to detect pests not just those that you have seen and sited, but also those that you may not be aware are still lurking behind your walls and ceilings. Pest infestation is one of the most challenging problems that homeowners often encounter at their premises. Boys' impulsiveness may result in better math ability

ScienceDaily (July 27, 2012) ? In a University of Missouri study, girls and boys started grade school with different approaches to solving arithmetic problems, with girls favoring a slow and accurate approach and boys a faster but more error prone approach. Girls' approach gave them an early advantage, but by the end of sixth grade boys had surpassed the girls. The MU study found that boys showed more preference for solving arithmetic problems by reciting an answer from memory, whereas girls were more likely to compute the answer by counting. Understanding these results may help teachers and parents guide students better.

"The observed difference in arithmetic accuracy between the sexes may arise from a the willingness to risk being wrong by answering from memory before one is sure of the correct answer," said Drew Bailey, a recent recipient of a Ph.D. in psychological science from MU. "In our study, we found that boys were more likely to call out answers than girls, even though they were less accurate early in school. Over time, though, this practice at remembering answers may have allowed boys to surpass girls in accuracy."

The MU study followed approximately 300 children as they progressed from first to sixth grade. In the first and second grades, the boys' tendency to give an answer quickly led to more answers in total, but also more wrong answers. Girls, on the other hand, were right more often, but responded more slowly and to fewer questions. By sixth grade, the boys were answering more problems and getting more correct.

"Developing mathematical skill may be part 'practice makes perfect' and part 'perfect makes practice,'" Bailey said. "Attempting more answers from memory gives risk-takers more practice, which may eventually lead to improvements in accuracy. It also is possible that children who are skilled at certain strategies are more likely to use them and therefore acquire more practice."

"Parents can give their children an advantage by making them comfortable with numbers and basic math before they start grade school, so that the children will have fewer trepidations about calling out answers," said David Geary, MU professor of psychological science and co-author of the study. "As an adult, it seems easy to remember basic math facts, but in children's brains the networks are still forming. It could be that trying to answer a problem from memory engages those networks and improves them, even if the answers aren't correct at first. In time, the brain develops improved memories and more correct answers result."

The study, "The codevelopment of skill at and preference for use of retrieval-based processes for solving addition problems: Individual and sex differences from first to sixth grades," was published in the Journal of Experimental Child Psychology. David Geary is Curators' Professor and a Thomas Jefferson Fellow in the Department of Psychological Sciences in the College of Arts and Science. Drew Bailey will be starting as a post-doctoral fellow at Carnegie Mellon University this fall.

Drought taking heavy toll on fishing industry

(Reuters) - The drought and extreme heat wreaking havoc across the U.S. farm belt is killing fish by the thousands in lakes and rivers and could pose a problem to migrating ducks and other waterfowl if it stretches into the fall, officials said.

Authorities are tallying up the losses which could run into the millions of dollar as the worst drought in 56 years expands, devastating the corn and soybean crops and forcing ranchers to cull their herds due to scorched pasture.

"Nationwide we are talking tens of millions to hundreds of millions (of dollars in losses). It just depends upon how long it lasts and how widespread it becomes," said fisheries biologist Dan Stephenson of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

"If this drought persists into fall, when the duck and other waterfowl pass through on their way south, there could be a larger problem," Stephenson told Reuters.

In Iowa, losses were estimated at $10.1 million after 37,000 fish were found dead along a 42-mile stretch of the Des Moines River from the dam in Eldon to the Farmington Bridge in the northeast of the state.

"Temperatures were extremely high ... I mean 97 degrees (Fahrenheit; 36 Celsius) is essentially unheard of on this stretch of the river and it's certainly higher than anything I've ever seen," says fisheries biologist Mark Flammang of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

Flammang said the majority of fish killed in Iowa were shovelnose sturgeon, with a value of $116.20 per lb based on guidelines from the American Fisheries Society.

After one of the mildest winters on record, the weather turned dry and temperatures began soaring into the triple-digit degrees Fahrenheit in the Midwest, which grows 75 percent of the country's corn and soybean crops.

Excessive heat arrived early for the game fishing industry, in June rather than the usual August to September. When June's record high temperatures burned through the Midwest, it was too late for the fishing industry to fix the problem.

"We install large pond and lake aeration systems to keep the water moving and oxygenated during stressful times, however the dilemma here is that these systems need to be installed in spring to start circulating water before the heat arrives," Nate Herman, owner of Herman Brothers Lake and Land Management Company in Peoria, Illinois, said. "Cooler water at the bottom needs to be mixed slowly before summer or you kill your fish yourself."

Fish are particularly susceptible to even subtle changes in their environments. Oxygen levels usually fluctuate during the day and night depending on temperature and other factors.

But the hot weather heated some waterways to between 85 and 90 degrees, forcing oxygen levels in the water down to a degree that caused fish to suffocate.

"The warmer the water, the less oxygen it can hold," said Herman.

Five parts per million of oxygen found in water is conducive to fish, three parts per million stresses them, and at two parts per million or less they start to die, he said.

The drought hit cool-water species of fish like black crappie, northern pike and walleye disproportionately harder as they are not accustomed to warm conditions.

Survey reveals nearly half of consumers fail to regularly upgrade ...

Tineka Smith Published 26 July 2012

Skype launches International Technology Upgrade Week (ITUW) after a survey revealed that 40% of adults do not upgrade software on their computer when prompted.

The launch of ITUW involves a global partnership with Symantec's Norton and TomTom to encourage consumers to regularly download free software updates to their computers, tablets and other portable devices.

International Technology Upgrade Week aims to educate and show consumers the value of keeping software up to date.

"Here at Skype, we are constantly getting feedback from our users and making improvements to Skype every day," says Linda Summers, Director of Product Marketing at Skype. "Only by regularly upgrading, are consumers able to enjoy the benefits of improved voice and video calling quality, longer mobile battery life and bug fixes, in addition to new features that we regularly add across our product portfolio, like Photo Sharing on mobile, or Group Video Calling and Group Screen Sharing on a computer."

A recent survey of British, American, and German consumers revealed that 40% of adults do not always update their software when prompted and one quarter of consumers said they do not fully understand what software updates and the benefits associated with them.

International Technology Upgrade Week

The study also found that 75% of adults received notifications on the computers advising them to update their software. More than 50%revealed that they needed to see a prompt two to five times before actually downloading and installing an update.

Another 25% revealed the did not know how to check if their installed software needs updating

Symantec reported it has blocked more than 5.5 billion malicious attacks in 2011 which has increased by 81% from the year before.

Behold, Early iPhone and iPad Prototypes

iproto13The iPhone's design is iconic but the final version looked rather different from early designs. With sleek but simple lines, the iPhone set the bar for smartphone design. This bar was set so high that most agree that the iPhone undeniably influenced other phones -- a thought that Samsung is currently fighting against. However, as revealed by court documents, the iPhone we all know finally hit the market after several generations of wild concepts.

These Are Some Of The Tools You Need For Doing Home Improvements

Before you start any home improvement project, you also have to choose the appropriate tools for the project. Sometimes our old tools will do the trick, but more times than not, new tools must be purchased for specific projects. Tools and equipment are necessary to do any type of home improvement project, especially on your own. Here are some proven tips on choosing the right tools for home-improvement undertaking.

Anyone that starts a home improvement project must consider all of the essentials before they begin. Screwdrivers are an essential part of any project like this, especially kits that come with different sizes and styles. Phillips and flat screwdrivers are standard with any kit that you purchase. Anyone that does a project like this should also have a claw hammer at their disposal. Another very useful tool to have is a pair of pliers. These can be used for a variety of reasons and come in different shapes and sizes. Slip joint pliers are probably the most useful all around variety you can get, as these can open to several different widths. If you have siding that you need to take off of the wall, or flooring that needs to be removed, a pry-bar is also a great tool to have.

Lighting is very important when doing jobs around the home. To need to make sure you have some kind of lighting when you are working in a dark space without power, but this shouldn't be an issue when you are working in a home with electricity. A reliable flashlight is a useful tool to have in many situations.

They come in various sizes, and it would be a good idea to have several different ones. For most jobs, you will need the use of your hands, so you will need a light, like the ones miners wear when they work, which is called a hands free headlamp. Anytime there isn't the proper lighting, such as dark stairways, the situation can become dangerous.

For more info construction leads

For many of the home repairs you will be doing, without a ladder you will never reach them. Pretty much any job done on the outside of your house will need a quality ladder, because you will be climbing up on a roof to repair shingles, or do exterior painting. For indoor tasks, you won't need to climb very high, so a stepladder will be all you need. An extension ladder that can be adjusted to different heights will be needed for many jobs. Ladders come with duty ratings, which tell you how much weight they can safely hold. Your needs in this area depend on how much you weigh, and what you may be carrying. Usually when you are climbing up a ladder, you will be carrying something, so figure that weight in also, when you are trying to determine what ladder you need. It is dangerous to have to stretch out to reach something, so make sure you have a ladder that is long enough.

As you can see, different tools and strategies must be used to properly complete your home improvement plan efficiently. Before your project begins, the research should be complete along with gathering the tools you will utilize. Catering to your own personal preferences, and to what you need to complete the job, get power tools (and manually operated ones) before you start. Having the most efficient tools can reduce the amount of time it takes and give you more impressive results.

Do Cats Always Land on Their Feet? | Pets Best Insurance Blog

A cat with animal insurance tries to land on its feet.

I have always been fascinated by cats, including cat health, behavior, their agility and athleticism, and of course their amazing ability to usually land on their feet. Whether they?re overshooting windowsills on a quest for birds or miscalculating fences as they run from barking dogs, they appear to regain perfect balance without much effort.

The question of how cats do this has baffled scientists for a very long time. In 1890, famous French scientist Etienne Jules Marey dropped a cat and filmed it using the first high speed camera which he invented. Yes, you can find the (very short) clip on YouTube! This offered the first glimpse into understanding this unique phenomenon.

Why Cats Land on Their Feet
A cat?s innate ability to orient itself as it falls in order to land on its feet is called the ?righting reflex?. This reflex begins to appear in kittens at 3-4 weeks of age, and is perfected at 7 weeks. The biomechanics of the reflex involve concepts of physics such as rotational motion, moment of inertia and the conservation of angular momentum. Physics was not my strong point in college, but I?ll try to simplify the explanation for you!

A cat begins to shift his balance from the second the flight begins. Cats have super sensitive sense organs which determine which side should be up. Much how like a skater controls her rate of spin by pulling in or extending her arms, the cat first tucks in his front legs and extends the rear legs, then reverses the procedure, extending his front legs and tucking in his rear legs.

Simply put, cats turn over in mid air by twisting around the middle and rotating the front and back halves separately. This feat is also due in part to their unique skeletal structure. Cats have a very flexible backbone. They have 30 vertebrae, which contributes to their suppleness (humans have just 24). In addition, cats have a nonfunctional clavicle (collarbone) which increases their flexibility because it does not connect to the shoulder joint like in people. Interestingly, tails are insignificant in free fall. Even cats without tails like the Manx can still navigate a fall.

Or Call 877-738-7237 to speak with a Pets Best Insurance Agent to Add a Pet to Your Current Policy

Beyond their amazing aerial spins, cats also have what could be called a built-in parachute. Their small size, light bone structure and thick fur allow them to slow their velocity by spreading out and becoming their own parachute, much like the maneuver that flying squirrels do in mid-air.

Using their righting reflex, cats can often land uninjured, but it is not always the case and cats can still be seriously injured, break bones or even die from falls. Cats have excellent survival instincts, and they don?t deliberately jump from high places that would be dangerous.

Scary Falls
Most cats fall accidentally from high-rise windows, terraces or fire escapes. This is an especially common summertime issue when many pet owners open windows to enjoy the weather. The occurrence is frequent enough that urban veterinarians have coined a phrase for it: High Rise Syndrome.

Remarkably, a 1987 study by veterinarians at New York?s Animal Medical Center found that cats that fell from heights of 7 to 32 stories were less likely to die than those that fell from 2 to 6 stories. One theory is that from falls above 7 stories, cats have time to reach terminal velocity (physics again!). At this speed, the cat relaxes its limbs and is better able to survive the impact. Another theory is that the greater height gives the cat time to right itself and spread its body out to adopt the parachute pose.

Protecting Your Cat
Of course, it?s always best to prevent accidents from happening in the first place. Cats need to be protected from the risk of falling. Be sure to install snug and sturdy screens in all your windows, and keep cats away from rooftops, balconies, window ledges and other high places. It?s also a good idea to have pet health insurance in place for when the unexpected happens. Cat insurance may help cover expensive veterinary bills for unexpected accidents (like falls) and illnesses too.

Effective Pest Control Process For A Cleaner And Safer Home ...

For any home owner, the problem of pests can pose a major challenge. This is so especially when you consider the different types of pests that is normally found and at home and their related diseases and messes. The pests can also make your home dirty and smelly making it unpleasant to stay in. many of these pests have been known to destroy furniture and other appliances in the home costing home owners millions of dollars every year.

Pest control is therefore an important aspect for any home owner and knowing how to go about it is always an important part of the process. Dealing with pest menace can be a ?do-it-yourself? process but at times professional help might be required especially when dealing with a high rate of pest infestation. Whatever the case however, knowing how to do it safely and successfully is always an important part of the whole pest control process. How To Bring The Pest Menace Under Control

  • Although it is advisable to use different pesticides that can be bought over the counter, it is advisable that such a decision be made carefully especially because most of them could be too strong for you and other people in the home. These could also prove poisonous to your pets and therefore a lot of care should be taken when choosing the right one.
  • Consider involving the services of a well equipped pest control company and especially if you have a problem of large infestation. There are equipments and safe supplies that are normally used by the professionals to eliminate the huge pest infestations both commercially and in the residential places.
  • Always seek to control the pests by dealing with the root cause rather than going for the ?fruits?. Proper inspection of the pest source is important and especially because it will help in dealing with the source of the pests. This is always a process that will definitely present you with a long term solution when controlling pests at home.
  • Do not expect a miraculous extermination of pests forever. It will be important to avoid raising your hopes so high about the possibility of exterminating the pests forever as the chances of reoccurrence are always high and especially after a number of months or years. Monitoring is an important part of the pest control process.
  • The most effective method of pest control is the preventive method. This can be done by keeping your garbage bin away from the house and always ensuring that it is empty or fully covered. This can be a good way of controlling some pests such as cockroaches and flies. Keeping both the interior and the exterior of your house as clean as possible can also help in keeping down the rate of pests in your home.

Combining both the preventive and exterminating measures against pests is the only great way to ensure that you have kept your home free from pests and preventing their reoccurrence again. this will at the end of the day be helpful in keeping your family healthy, preventing damage to the home and will also save you a lot of money in the long run.

Google regulatory filings reveal Motorolas worth, IP worth 44 percent of the company's value

Google's most recent filing to the SEC has revealed how the company came to that $12.4 billion valuation of Motorola. Unsurprisingly, its intellectual property portfolio comprised the bulk of the price -- with Mountain View stumping up $5.5 billion for the "patents and developed technology" owned therein. Larry Page claimed that the deal would "supercharge" the Android ecosystem, which led to the company paying $2.6 billion for goodwill -- which was only expected to arise once the buyout was completed. The company spent $630 million on "net assets," $2.9 billion to buy the phone maker's cash reserves and $730 million on customer relationships. During its most recent earnings call, Google said it had nothing to announce regarding the newest member of the family -- but perhaps we can look forward to some more exciting hardware... pretty please?

Basal cell carcinoma risk can be chronic

ScienceDaily (July 25, 2012) ? A new analysis of factors that predict basal cell carcinoma recurrence in high-risk people finds that for many people it's more of a chronic disease. High sun exposure before the age of 30 was a major predictor, as was a history of eczema.

Martin Weinstock and colleagues reported their findings online July 19 in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology.

In the powerful sunlight of July, newly published results from a large study of people at high risk for basal cell carcinoma support the emerging view of the nation's most common cancer as a chronic ailment that often repeatedly afflicts older people but for which the seeds may be planted in youth. The research also found a new association with eczema.

"Basal cell carcinoma is a chronic disease once people have had multiple instances of it, because they are always at risk of getting more," said Dr. Martin Weinstock, professor of dermatology in the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, who practices at the Providence Veterans Affairs Medical Center. "It's not something at the moment we can cure. It's something that we need to monitor continually so that when these cancers crop up we can minimize the damage."

Dermatologists hold out hope for a medication that will help prevent recurrences of BCC. To test one such medicine, Weinstock chaired the six-site, six-year VA Topical Tretinoin Chemoprevential Trial, which last year found that the skin medication failed to prevent further instances of BCC in high-risk patients.

Weinstock is the corresponding author of the new study, published online July 19 in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, which presents an analysis of the risk predictors of BCC recurrence found among the trial's population of 1,131 people, all of whom were veterans, 97 percent of whom were men, and whose median age was 72. On average, a participant had more than three episodes of BCC or squamous cell carcinoma before entering the study.

History, eczema, and early exposure

Overall, 44 percent of study participants developed new BCCs during the study period. The biggest predictor of another bout with BCC after three to four years of follow-up was a prior history of them. The 129 participants who had more than five BCCs in the five years before the study had a hazard rate ratio that was nearly four times as high as that of the 204 people who had none or one and more than twice as high that of the 200 people who had three.

Eczema was another predictor of BCC recurrence in the study's high-risk group. Participants who acknowledged a family history of the skin condition had a hazard rate ratio 1.54 times higher than people who did not, after statistical adjustments.

"We don't know why this is," Weinstock said. "The connection with eczema is something that's new, that needs to be further explored."

Age was another predictor, and not just in providing further confirmation that the risk people face increases with age. The study also showed that particularly intense sun exposure before the age of 30 was a strong a predictor of BCC occurrence among the high-risk study population, even though for most of them their 30s were decades ago.

"We talk about sun protection, which is important, but that's something for basal cell that's most important in your youth," Weinstock said. "While we don't exonerate UV exposure in one's 40s, 50s, and 60s, it was particularly UV exposure before the age of 30 that was most closely related to BCC in our study."

Awaiting a new trial

If limiting UV exposure is most crucial before the age of 30, what can doctors do for older people who may be headed for multiple bouts with BCC?

"Right now we have this wait and cut approach," he said. "We know these people are at high risk and we know that most of them are going to get more."

A better solution comes back to finding and testing preventive medication. Tretinoin didn't work, but Weinstock said he and his colleagues are testing another called 5-Fluorouracil. He said he is optimistic but has not yet seen the data from a trial that began about three years ago.

Robert Dyer of the Providence VA Medical Center and Brown University was the study's lead author. In addition to Dyer and Weinstock, other authors on the paper are Tobias Cohen, Amilcar Rizzo, Stephen Brigham and the VATTC Trial Group.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Co-operative Studies Program funded the research.

NKorea confirms leader Kim Jong Un is married

(AP) ? North Korea said its new, young leader Kim Jong Un is married, announcing it for the first time in a brief and routine state TV report Wednesday evening that ends weeks of speculation about a beautiful woman who accompanied him to recent public events.

Kim toured an amusement park with his "wife, comrade Ri Sol Ju" on Tuesday, while a crowd cheered for the leader, the speaker said without giving any more details about Ri, including how long they had been married.

Seven months after inheriting the country from his father, Kim Jong Il, the 20-something leader has been shown in the media several times with the young woman, including at a concert where Mickey Mouse and other Disney characters appeared and at tours of various North Korean sites.

While the woman hasn't been identified until now, media and analysts in the South were quick to guess that she was his wife.

Kim's public appearances with the woman are a striking change from his father's style. Kim Jong Il's 17-year rule was known for its secrecy. His companions and his children weren't mentioned by state media, including Kim Jong Un, who was virtually unknown before his formal introduction to the world in late 2010.

The new leader's style is considered more similar to his grandfather, North Korea founder Kim Il Sung, who built homes, parks and schools and was often shown alongside his wife, Kim Jong Suk, and with children in his arms.

The speculation about Kim Jong Un's private life has coincided with high tension on the Korean Peninsula following a North Korean long-range rocket launch in April and repeated threats by Pyongyang to attack the South.
